    Quick Supercharger question

    Does the Supercharger operate in either an "on" or "off" mode? I know the ECU signals when the clutch should engauge but does it throttle how much output the SuperCharger provides or is the output consisten (on or off)?

    Hi Kraut,
    The supercharger operates via the ECU with a simple on/off clutch.
    The output charge is directly porportional to the engine RPM,so there is no "SC throttle" as such.
    However there is an electronic bypass which opens under light throttle and when the SC is in the off stat.

    Its 5 PSI wide open

    on accel it turns on about 2k rpms
    if you relocate your MAF 1.5k

    The bypass (werid looking thing connected to your airbox) goes hand and hand with you T-body. When your T-body is at wide open, the bypass is full closed.

    I was going to mess with it on day to see how much volts does it take to kick the clutch on...just don't have the time...

    PAULLLL did you rebuild the engine back?

    Cru328prod, what's the function of the bypass? When would it activate and why?

    because if the bypass isn't closed....the supercharger would force air threw it....instead of the intercooler. the bypass is only there because the supercharger is on a clutch. so when superchargr isn't active...the bypass stays open...and vice versa

    -Engine idleing/car not moving: bypass open,SC disengaged.
    -Engine idleing/car moving: bypass open,SC engaged
    -Car accelerating: Bypass closed,SC engaged
    -Car decelerating: Bypass open,SC engaged
    -Car cruising: Bypass open,SC engaged

    From this you can see while the car is moving the SC stays engaged ready to produce boost when the VDO bypass closes.
    While the Bypass is open it simply circulates air through the air filter box and back into the SC.

    Why we have the bypass:
    -Circulate/vent air to avoid pressure buildup between the SC and TB while under light load and when the TB closes after accelertaion.
    -To draw air in when the SC is disengaged because it is hard to draw air through an SC which isnt turning.

    To a certain extent The bypass does the oposite of what the throttle body is doing,that is when the TB closes the bypass opens and when the TB opens past a set point the bypass closeses.

    Hope that isnt to confusing.
