    #23 and #27 fuse

(while cleaning the contact points of the visor vanity, the damn
thing shorted and burned out both fuses)

According to the fuse box cover:

#23 - Front dome light, infrared remote control,
read head restraints etc. etc. - STATION WAGON ONLY

#27- Dome lights, trunk illumination, central locking,
    infrared remote control.

my problem: #27 burned out and #23 burned out as well.

I thought #23 only applies to Station wagons. I'm confused.

Also, why wouldn't the car start up if any of these 2 fuses
    are out ?

since its the fuse for the infrared remote.. maybe it isnt seeing that you are putting the key into the ignition and turning it..
I think when you unlock your doors with the remote.. it sends the signal from the sensor in the mirror to the starter/ignition curcuit. if it doesnt see it.. it dont let you start your car..
were you able to unlock and lock your doors with your remote when the fuse was burned out?

Very good point and logical SLAMMED_C.
However, the car was not locked to begin with. I suspect that
the circuit in #23 and #27 crossover each other but there
is no way to know for sure without reading the circuit schematic.

my book only has 98 and newer w202's (as of 1.9.97)which to me means late production 97's as a 98 model year.
I will check for you tomorrow and let you know.. I need to look at diagrams for 97 and older W202's.

okay.. sorry for the delay man.
I have located the wiring diagram.
if you want a copy of it.. let me know and I will email it to you.
basically the fuses 23 and 27 both run to the RCL control module... and fuse 23 also runs to the ATA and the Starter lock out relay..
if the car is locked then you will not get authorization to start the car.. so since the fuses were blown it didnt see if the doors were locked of unlocked... and it didnt allow you to start the car.
