Side view mirror spring...

While washing the car today I bumped the mirror and the little piece that holds the spring to the mirror assembly broke off, so now the mirror can just flop around.

I have the mirror off the car, and have done a search and have a good idea of how I want to fix this, but it seems that other people that have had this problem have no problem getting the spring back on to whatever it is they are reattaching it to.... the spring in my mirror really doesn't want me to pull on it - it's very hard just to get it to stretch maybe 1/2 an inch.

Is this spring supposed to be that taught? Or should it be giving a little bit more?
