Valve cover question

[Espresso]

I changed my gaskets today & noticed on the driverside cover there were two hollow tubes that protrude into the head. Does anyone know WTF these things are for? Obviously for sometype of ventalation, but how & why this way?. I noticed mine were plugged up. I easily unplugged them by sticking on a hose & lowing through it.
Any idea why MB designed them the way they did?

Ummm, im not sure but it might be part if teh crankcase breather. Im not sure about on you 280, but it may be. If there is a hose running off of the outside of it to the air intake, then its the crankcase breather.

Can you post a broader picture...maybe of the whole valve cover?? Thanks!
