For those interested in switching their dome, tunk, and liscence plate bulbs to the 39mm hyper white 9 led feston bulbs you can contact

warden_jp2002@yahoo.co.jp

Tell him your with club202
He ships from uk

For $31 (us, shipping included) you get 8 bulbs.

*2 for front map lights

*1 for rear dome

*1 for trunk

*2 for plate lights

*and 2 spare (optional)

These are the feston 9 led hyper white 39mm bulbs. and a pretty good deal if you dont mind waiting the little extra shipping time (about 10 days) just thought id throw this to the club cuz its an easy, cheap, cool lookin mod. =)

Hey Guys !

I've written a DIY topic about changing bulbs of the dash, but it was on benzsport i think...

I'm gonna see if it is anymore on that board...:)

Frenchy
09-05-2006, 01:12 AM
Here a topic, but not the one I thought...

http://www.bnzsport.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1667&highlight=dash+cluster

Anyway,

here are the bulbs that we have in Dash Cluster :

3 like this one (1,2 W) for Ext. Temp. /Miles / Clock

http://www.nsifleet.com/images/perf_catalog/nsi_products/600809.jpg

and 2 like this one (w5w) 3w or 5w, the same like citylights :

http://www.seagulllighting.com/9731-lg.jpeg

And here, a DIY job to come to the Bulbs :

First of all, you'll need 2 Alen Keys #5 aor the Mercedes Tool :
W 140 589 02 33 About 15$) and 2 pieces of Linoleum or PVC, to protect your cluster'frame when inserting the tools or Alen Keys.

http://www.w202-freunde.de/tipps/bilder/tacho1.jpg

So the top of the Cluster will be accessible and you'll be able to pull it with your fingers.

http://www.w202-freunde.de/tipps/bilder/tacho2.jpg

Then you have 2 possibilities :

1st : Pull/push the top of the Cluster, to pull it out from bottom too, so you won't need to unscrew the bottom panel under the Stearing wheel.

2nd. But if it's easier for you, you can unscrew the bottom panel, and push the Cluster from the inner side so it will go out easily.

When the Cluster is out, the Stearing wheel must be in normal position, to evacuate the Cluster on the right side, Then, just unplug the 2 connectors on the back of the Cluster, those connectors have safety clips, that have to be opened before unplugg.
:

http://www.w202-freunde.de/tipps/bilder/tacho3.jpg

So it is...

Regards,

Frenchy.

found this guy on ebay guys. these bulbs are direct replacements (holders and bulbs included) in any color you want. it says the holders are made by OSRAM just like the factory ones. only question is the speedo plate with the numbers is painted amber so if i install say a hyper white bulb from the guy will it shine through still amber or would it be hyper white now?

i'd rather do a blue bulb backlight for speedo and tach, with white face gagues and hyper white for the dummy lights. this looks like a cool project :D

i wonder how much work it would be to re-design the enter gague cluster by making a CAD drawing of it, and having my uncle laser cut a new plate out of aluminum. then we could just use any color inserts we wanted (if any) and any color bulbs. hell, if that were the route we could put in multi color lights, and have a selection switch change the voltage to the LEDs and then you'd have interior lights that change with the turn of a dial to the desired color :D

It comes out white..but it's just not as white as the regular ones..so the reader's light actually looks greyish yellow. Other than that i love all the other lights. They're so bright and white i just love them. O yeh and to clarify, i got them from warden_jp

Nope, you can(t use those for you Instrument Cluster, they seem to be to Big to be fitted in the small hole.

And it they are not to big, they'll be too long, and you won't be able to plug them properly.

In a headlight, where you have plenty of place, it's not a problem, but in the IC it's not the same...

Wow !! Those seem to be THE THING we neeeeeeeeeeed !!

Since they are only 1W consuption, and they announce no HEAT.

They are smaller, i mean not so longer than the OEM, this is what we need.

Or it will be a problem (too short)

Because the 2 big OEM bulbs are 3W and illuminate a PLEXIglass piece that illuminate the speedo and the RPM uniformately.

Those OEM bulbs are plugged in back of the cluster and stand threw the hole of a Plexiglass piece that diffuse the light for the speedo and RPM.

since those LEDS are 180° light diffusion, it could do the thing, because the previous LEDS i used were not so bright, and have not such wide spot.

The only thing i fear is that since they are so bright, they may cause Shiny spot on the back of the speedo and RPM...:(

I mean that the IC will be bright enough, but with 2 brighter spots where the bulbs are placed :(( Definitely if you go for White Gauges.

I made mine in RED(with OEM 5W bulbls) by placing under Speedo and RPM some RED PVC parts cut like circles, where the numbers stand.

So the colour is equal all around with no brighter spots.

The only thing i want now, would be to illuminate the needles in other colour, maybe Blue or White.

I think I'm gonna buy those fantastic LEDS and try different coulours (PVC circle pieces) Red and blue.

Thanks anyway for the link ;)

Here is what I meaned....

The 2 brighter light spots :

http://www.mb-treff.de/anleitungen/w202/tachoblau_led/index.php

Click on the Pic :

http://www.kirikoo.net/images/tn/tn_forum_7frenchy-20060907-110315.jpg (http://www.kirikoo.net/images/7frenchy-20060907-110315.jpg)

And here you have the Backside of the IC :

http://www.kirikoo.net/images/tn/tn_forum_7frenchy-20060907-110428.jpg (http://www.kirikoo.net/images/7frenchy-20060907-110428.jpg)

The 2 big Bulbs are the Red ones and the small ones are the Blue ones and the 3 green ones that light up the Clock, Ext Temp°, and Miles counter.

Here a pic of my IC, after modding it in Red, as you can see, I have no Brighter spots, using some Plastic pieces, but the needles still in Ugly Orange....:( I think I have to remove the Paint under needles, and repaint them in Blue or so, but after the Blue paint, i nearly sure i'll have to add some white paint.

Here the pic (clickable) :

that first link for the 2 big bulbs doesn't work. you have the page on ebay so i can buy them from the guy and start this install. i would also like to try and covert the numbers around the shifter but that is a very small skinny bulb that i haven't found except OEM replacement (nothing bright white or anything like that)

Hi,

@1SIKBNZ : Yes, the 2 ebay links for the Bulbs are good.

So, y'ou'll need 2 big ones, but 5 small ones and not 3.

Since there are 3 small bulbs for the 3 displays (Clock, Miles, Temp°), but there are 2 more small bulbs beside the 2 big ones (One for the Right side of the RPM, and the second one for the left side of the Water Temp°)

As you can see on this pic :

The 2 small bulbs are in orange on the pic below.

http://www.kirikoo.net/images/tn/tn_forum_7frenchy-20060907-110428.jpg

Unfortunately, i've lost all the pics i made of the Installation, they were on my former MSN homepage, but since i havn't open this page for more than one month, they closed it...

Here a little Paint job, to show you how I cut the plastic pieces inserted behind the OEM Gauges. To insert them, you don't need to remove the needles, you just have to unstuck the gauges all around by pulling them slowly, and then you just have to place correctly the red parts. The better way, do that on a table, and place a light under the Cluster, so you'll be able to put parts correctly.

Here the Pic :

http://www.kirikoo.net/images/tn/tn_forum_7frenchy-20060908-010455.jpg (http://www.kirikoo.net/images/7frenchy-20060908-010455.jpg)

I've already used the same model and they were blown after 2 weeks...:(

The "inverted" means that they can be plugged directly to the 12V, without adding Resistor :)

UPDATE GUYS.........................................

ok so i got the two large bulbs (the 194 LED's) and installed them. let me just say crap. it illuminated the temp/fuel and the rpm sides but the led's don't have the angle to shine on the speedo at all. speedo was 100% dark (no light). i haven't put in the 3 small ones yet cuz i'm still waiting for them to be shipped but those won't be a problem since then shine directly over the miles, time, and ext temp.

so i went to pepboys and bought some (super bright hyper white 194 miniature bulbs) made by american auto accessories. their basically like the icy hot blue lights that autozone has but i like the ones from pepboys alot more as i tried both. it's a blue bulb but it's shine white which i am more pleased with. nothing like the white from the 211 sport clusters but it's better then then amber like before.

part number for the bulbs from pepboys is 47-01940 is you guys are interested. they come in single packs and are about $6.99 each!

last pic is what is looks like during the day or with light on it. i left the ext temp bulb stock for the pic so you can see the difference. the cluster is a white/slight blue color whereas the digital display from the LED's is a straight blue color. the the best quality LED's bulbs as i broke a few of the tabs when twisting because they don't fit perfect. you have to bend the tabs down slightly so it makes contact and it's basically a trial & error. order spares if you guys decide to do this as you will need them. i warn you....they break really easy. the quality of the contruction is fair the the clarity of the light is really good when installed and viewed in the car. i know the digital display look blurry at night when lite but it's just the camera...it's is fine in person!!!!!!!!!!!!

scroll up to previous posts. the clock and meters are LED's which is y they are so bright. the LED's i bought for the speedo, rpm, etc didn't shine the whole unit cuz they didn't have enough angle on the beam so i used regular 194 xenon white bulbs from pepboys!

@1995c280 : Why did you get the chrome rings for the 97 Cluster, you'd better take some complete circles instead of this.

Regards,

Frenchy.

i bought the wrong ones a long time ago on accident. neglected to see the other style at the time. i will switch eventually! thanks.

97c280, i wouldn'y buy from this guy as it took like 3 weeks to ship, LOL. i just bought new lights for the whole cluster from this place.
http://www.superlumination.com/

i believe they are in arizona so shipping will be quick. i let you guys know how those turn out!

update............

i installed the lights last week i bought from http://www.superlumination.com/

must have forgot to post up on here though with an update. to me they are much better quality and only took a few days to ship to the east coast.

you will need the wedge bulbs with the green base. they come in either LED or regular bulbs. they also have a + and - so if you install them and they don't light up...reverse them in your cluster. at first i thought they were defective, LOL!

it pretty much looks the same except that the bulbs from this place are far better quality than the ones off ebay!

it's really hard to take good pictures of this because you need to take them at night with the flash off at the right angle! but in my opinion it is worth the few bucks to get almost all the orange outta the cluster, LOL!

Can someone please confirm what bulbs I need for the following:

2 for the Courtesy Lights in front doors

2 For the Front Dome Lights

1 for the Rear Dome Light

2 for the rear license plate (Is this C5W festoon? 6418?)

1 for the inside trunk light for an update where the light is in the middle.

A lot of the ebay auctions have numbers like 1103 etc so I have no idea what to get? Or what MM the bulbs are in each position?

I would check but my car is at the shop getting some things done so I won't have it for a couple of days!

Thanks.

Wanna say thank you to Frenchy for posting up the how-to for removing the gauge cluster. Will be utilizing that soon!

And for the warden_jp seller on ebay...

I've purchased off him a few times before for my Honda.
Was very happy with the LED's I got, but the 2nd and 3rd time I ordered from him, there were serious problems with the shipping. He fixed it the second time, but the third time was more hesitant to, and now refuses to sell to me on ebay. (2nd time i ordered, there was a hole in the package and the bulbs were missing, 3rd time I waited almost 2 months, and didnt recieve a package. It took him another month to send me replacements.)

I did like the bulbs I got though, and will be talking with him in hopes to order from him again soon.

Hey 1SIKBNZ can you tell me what bulb size or # is needed for each of the interior bulbs and license plate?

*2 for front map lights

*1 for rear dome

*1 for trunk

*2 for plate lights

*and 2 spare (optional)

Is there one for the glove compartment?

I'm thinking of change my bulbs soon.

update, I just emailed the guy. He says that the 9leds have been replaced with 18leds and that the set of 8 is now 55 USD. Are 18leds twice as bright as the already very bright 9Leds?

I am currently using 6LED ones from superbrightled.com for my rear license plate light and it is very bright. It creates a line of light on the ground. look for my thread.
