Brak warning light and beeper.....

I have a 1997 C280 Sport. Sometimes (actually more frequently lately than not) when I hit a bump or irregular road surface while driving (virtually unheard of in New England, I know) the brake warning light comes on and the beeper beeps incessantly until corrected. Eliminating the light and beeper usually involves pulling the e-brake release handle until it goes away or pushing up on the hood release latch. The latter seems to work better. i'm guessing i have a short somewhere. has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, what was the permanent cure?
