First ill start off with an intro. my names chris i live in des plaines IL and my daily driver is a 2000 porsche carrera c2 with over 100k miles and my "spare car" is a barely running 1995 c280 with 200k miles. I was sitting there the other day thinking of a car to buy to mod. i wanted something that is modded to much so i can stand out. i also wanted a vip style. and then it hit my that i can just work on my c280. so my first mod would have to be something with the engine. i was thinking of just swapping in a newer c280 engine but then i though it would just be better to upgrade. so my question to you guys is do any of you know where i can get a c36 amg engine? also any tips on doing th swap are welcome and if you guys happen to have a better idea (different engine or something) then please go right ahead and say it. thanks in advance and sorry about the long read

if I was in your shoes, I would look for a totalled C36 with all the parts you need - say the tranny the engine all the electricals and save you many trips to the stealership.

besides that - you may also help the rest of us by strip selling whatever the totalled C36 may have on it.

thats just an idea, good luck finding a totalled C36. ;)

If I'm not mistaken, all m104 engines (C280, C36, and E320) from 1994 to 1996 or 1997 have the same transmission. I believe it's rated at 320hp or something similar.

On a related note....

An engine from a C36 would most likely be extremely difficult to find these days. It's the AMG engine produced in the smallest number, and they all (all m104 engines again) came with bad wiring harnesses, throttle body actuators, and head gaskets. Those 3 repairs all at once fixed at a dealership would cost somewhere between $7,000 and $10,000--a price that I'm sure sent some of our beloved 202's to their grave.

But then again, you'd be more likely to find an un-wrecked C36 somewhere that's in need of one, two, or all three of these repairs and is priced accordingly. To find one of those is to find a car already prime for your "modding," once you repair it. Keep in mind, your 1995 C280 has all the same problems. You could just sell it (for the ridiculously low price it's worth) and start fresh on an entirely AMG-built car. I'm not the modding type, but I think that's a far better platform to begin customizing.

Another option: There are TONS of 3.2l m104 engines from E320's all over the place. It's not quite a C36 engine, but it's definitely more than the m104 2.8l you already have. And it would bolt right in. 20% hp/torque gain with no weight punishment. Then some more mods on top of that would push your ratings up even higher.

There is a C36 engine up on eBay right now:

eBay Link (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ENGINE-MERCEDES-C36-AMG-1995-96-97_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33615QQihZ005QQitemZ 150046715998)

As for the transmission, IIRC, the C36 used the same tranny as the E500. It was not the same as other W202's. At least for 1995, and 1996, I don't know about the 1997 with the 5 speed.

I think it would be cheaper to sell your C280, and buy a C36. Resale value will be much better, also.
