besides actually checking the tire pressure are their any symptoms that may let you know you have low tire pressure??

Lower gas mileage?, Perhaps bouncy ride, or swaying to a side if there's only one tire with low pressure.

more traction, softer ride, steering wheel heavy...those are my symptoms..

Uneven wear on the tires, unless you have camber problems.

ASR will activate unexpectedly when one tire's pressure gets too low.

You may experience some vibration at speed like out of balance tires.
