I am driving a BMW E36 318 AI. Intend to change it to a W202 C180. Need to clarify with some experts here on the following:
1. What's the difference in engine between W202 and W124? I know W124 is a fuel guzzler, i hope W202 is okay.
2. Should i get a C200 or a C180, if petrol consumption is much of a difference.

Thanks.

Charles

Id aim for a C230, we dont have C200 or C180 in US but I can imagine how slow those are going to be.

I have a C230 nonK its pretty good on gas i drive 60-80 miles a day. I added a Cold air intake, dont know if that does anything to improve efficiancy but I guess it makes the car a little quicker from start and sounds nicer. :)

The W202's you mentioned are inline 4 cylinders. The C180 is rated at 122bhp@5500 and the C200 is 136bhp@5500.

The W124's have a wide variety of engine sizes. They go from the inline 4 with 109bhp@5200 all the way to the v8 with 326bhp@5700.

If you are concerned with fuel consumption, I'd say the smaller car (W202) is your best choice. The difference in weight between the C180 and C200 is 15 kilos. Not much, but the C200 also has 14 more bhp.

**information gathered from Mercedes Enthusiast magazine.

definetly get the 202, small engine small car, in comparision to small engine, big car, there are countless 180's and 200's here in lebanon since fuel prices are pretty high, you might wanna ask a member who owns a 180 or 200 on his mpg

also search in the posts for common problems in the 202's so that you know what you are looking out for when you are buying the car..good luck and welcome

Hi,
I got a 95' C180 and before that I got a BMW E36 318i, event had the same engine capacity it is true different in its petrol consumption. C180 has lots lower consumption than the Bimmers.
I really recomend to use the C180
Thx

Thomas,

Would you recommend C200? Anyway, what's your km/litre reading for C180?

C200 has bigger power than c180, but in my daily traffic condition in Jakarta my C180 is more than enough.. Back in city it has 8km/litre and during out of town in the highway sometimes it can reach 10km/litre.

Go for the C220 or C230, the fuel consumption is pretty much the same, but they are a lot comfortable when you don't have to hit the pedal so hard all the time. My C 220 with automatic takes around 10 litres per 100 km in town cruising, and under 8 litres when driving 80-100 km/h.

Or why not a diesel? Especially CDI engines are really economical and with a chip also more powerful than I4 petrol engines.

There isn't a lot difference in economical sense between W124 and W202. E 200 and E 220 had the same engines as W202, weight is about the same, and so is the aerodynamics... I had a W124 before my W202. I prefer W202, because W124 feels quite a lot older car than C class. Both are anyway excellent cars.

or if you want ESPECIALLY fuel-efficient w202 buy a C200 diesel like mine :) it does ~ 45 mpg (~ 5.2 l/100km) driving in CITY, and the engine is eternal! of course in this case you must not think about car's power...even though it has enough of it for driving in a heavy traffic when you dont need speed.

That's excellent fuel efficiency !!! Sigh, there isn't any diesel model available in Singapore.

Anyone has any issue with the electricals in a W202? Transmission problem???
