is it better to use the pump or to drain the thing, or are they both exactly the same...

It doesn't really matter either way. The major point is to get the old stuff out and the new stuff in.

Personally, it's much easier to change the oil by removing the drain plug.

Yea, I've gone back and forth on whether or not to purchase a top side vac, or just do it the old fashioned way. (Since I haven't decided, I continue to pay my mech to do it.) HOWEVER, now that I see 714guy's clear write up, I'm going under to do the task. BTW, I've never noticed drain pans that hold over 5 qt. Are they available at an auto parts store?
