I have a ?! How loud is your engine? I notice on mine it sounds a bit like a 240D. I have looked into lots of things and found the timing chain tensioner helped but still has some niose. I have searched around and other people with the same issue. I an now wondering if its just the car. Maybee its just the way AMG's and there is nothing to fix. So if any body would chime in and let me know I might be able to sleep better!
Thanks
hey what did you do with the timing chain tensioner?....reset it?

I believe the noise you are describing is normal on the C36....a quiet diesel rumble right? Normal or not my C36 has it.

I thought it might be that way. Im just chaseing a ghost. Im very anal about noises. But I couldn't find anything wrong.
Thanks for the input guys.
Well, I wouldn't say 240D, but a late E300D would be about right. It is an artifact of proper harmonic tuning of the intake and exhaust paths. One of the reasons the C36 engine performs so well at higher RPM's.

my 2.3 190e, c230k, slk55 and various other w202/w203 kompressors sound like shit IMO.. im not sure if its the injectors, timing chain, or valves.. but the 4cylinder mercedes engines sound like a diesel! the slk55 has a ticking sound.
I think the new m3 sounds like shit too. simular sound to the mercedes

My C36 is a 05/1996 and has the later improved tensioner. It sounds OK to me.

I actualy did that a while ago. But it seems the C36 are louder than the rest. On that link they were all normal c classes.

Mine sounds like a diesel too... but only after it warms up, around idle speed, it really annoys me

Hmmm... interesting twist to the story, the shock is missing from my car, the bolt hole is there, and if i look down the bottom where the other end is supposed to be there looks to be a bit of rubber there..... i'm guessing this is why my car has the diesel noise haha, how bad would it be not having the shock? (Planning to replace it ASAP)

benzboy,
You might need to do some research. As I already mentioned above, the following post might be of some help:
http://www.amg-owners-club.org/board/en/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=12157&sid=d1c34e4f8cec98fbb9a7169b730ebfbc
Specifically, "...Part No 104 200 08 70 Belt Tightener (from engine no 034967) replaces Part No 103 200 08 70 Belt Tightener and Part No 103 200 01 14 Shock Absorber (from the earlier engine numbers). That means the newer part on our cars has an integral shock absorbing capability that replaces the need for the shock absorber."

Ahh... I completely missed that  have you replaced yours and found it fixed the noise?
Cheers
