Looks like it's leaking, but from where? The same liquid texture can be seen on top of the diff and even on the box that holds the spare tire.... I've checked the parking space where I leave the car and havent seen any oil spots

What are the symptoms of having low oil in the differential?

i've got the same thing. my tech diagnosed it and told me that i had leaks from the front driveshaft seal and the left flange seal. the seals itselves costs less than $10, but the job was claimed to be a 6 hr job. sooo.... i haven't had it done yet. i guess as long as u don't see oil spots on the parking floor, u should be ok. just have it top off your next trip into your shop.
i was told by another mb tech that these diff leaks because they tend to be over filled.

pretty sure thats not uncommen!...
theres a vent on the top rear end of the diff...seems to leak oil often...(well mine did)
theres a thread on checking and changing the oil here somwhere...

it could be the vent leaks due to over filling

The previous owner gave me all the receipts from his trips to the dealer, and they fixed a "leaking differential" before... Something's wrong with this design...

from what I see, its leaking from the sealant, or the lack of. the rear diff cover doesnt use a gasket, but a brush on sealant. if applied incorrectly, the gear oil will leak slowly past the cover. another possibility is the pinion seal, which is very common. and if its coming from the top of the diff, its most likely coming from the overflow/vent tube. this would happen if the diff was overfilled, however, the diff cannot be overfilled when filling the diff when its on the car, only if they filled it when they were servicing it and had it out.

Change your gasket on the differential. Believe me dealer wanted to get it done quick, they don't wait for the sealant to dry out a little before putting back together. That may explained why the seal is not good....

that is because differential fluid is much thicker than engine oil. hense the reason you must let an oil pan dry for at lease 2 hours minimum before adding oil. diff fluid is much thicker and will not leak through the sealant if applied properly. most people don't apply enough and circle the sealant around the holes where the bolts on the rear cover go through. also you must clean the surface very good with either a razor blade and/or a whiz wheel before applying the new sealant.

my car has the same problem and is the rear seals in this case. when i change the oil in the car i also check the oil in the diff and top off if needed. works for now, i intend on getting it fixed this winter.

Hey,
Had exact same problem on my 2000 c230, had problem when I bought the car. Had it looked over before I bought the car, and the tech said it was very common but to get it done soon. The job on mine was like $400-$500, but the car was under warranty. Otherwise I would have brought it to the local MB repair shop, which was $250-$300. If your from Chicago, I'll give you the shop name. Also had to replace my flex disc, have two bent rims from previous owner, air conditioning stopped working, 2 speakers replaced, trans bushing replaced, trans cooler replaced (not exactly sure what this was).

Mmmm I live in Orlando, so I'll have to see what estimates I can come up with over here.... At least it isnt a 1000 dollar job. :/

dude dont even get it twisted... that fark is not even deserving of being called a hacker/nerd.. TRUST ME I KNOW PLENTY OF THEM.. he is just two bit fucking pathetic little script kidy

aka a owned bi0tch..

for thoses that have the rouge spyware, I can advise you how to remove it manually.. using a tool "HIJACKTHIS" and "Task Manager"

the guy obviously couldnt hack his way out of a vtec learning puter. hes just got 2 brain cells for speading shabby rouge anti spyware crap.. Im supprise the authors of VirusBurst/VirusBurster & SpyHunter havnt been investigated by the FBI..
quite frankly I feel like reporting the whole afair to various cyber abuse authoritys..

tip: the "Free-spyware-scanner-install.exe" is SpyHunter, dont waste your time unless you want to part with money.. spyhunter conviently deals with virusburster, even #1 in google, but will only scan and hold you ransom to pay for it and will not actually remove malware in any shape or form.

ever since i first ever encountered this insurmountable shit pile, I figured that SpyHunter and Virusburster == THE SAME GUY/Company.. my conspiracy heh the conspiracy theory side of me runs wild in suitations like this..
