i got in my car today and put on my cd player in my 2 month old alpine hu(cda-9856) and it worked fine so did the tuner, later put a cd in and heard a pop, nothing would work at all, got back in the car an hour later and only the two back door speakers were working, i think, not sure if its the hu, which was already replaced the day after i got it from frying something inside, or if it is the stock bose amp which i suspect it is because when i tried to use the power IC on and off thing on the hu it did not shut the amp on or off., also when i would use the balance and turn it to the left nothing would work only to the right is there a fuse for the amp? or maybe one burnt out in the radio?or is it the fuse on the pac-oem2 interface that i think is installed to work with the bose, any ideas thanks anf6789

I've got an alpine 9856 with my stock amp, everything works great... better than the stock unit IMO.. when I still have my stock HU, it popped just like yours did, but the difference is I don't have any sound at all from any speaker, but the HU looks to be working. I took the stock amp out and found a fuse on the bottom side of it, it doesn't look bad but I went ahead and change it anyway. After that, everything works fine... maybe you could try that...

pioneer 4 life lol
i always hated alpine..they sound good...but i hate em...its pioneer for me...anyways check the amp in the back the wiring, then check the wiring behind the head unit, and hope you dont find any thing dangerous...my friend had his beutifull stereo installed a week ago, and he smelt something burning in the car, he pulled over and it was the head unit he just bought, the wires were being fried....

i couldnt agree more except mine are 10 years old. I've had 3 decks and they were all alpine because they sound so good to me.

i am checking the bose amp right now, it actually worked fine just a minute ago but this morning not so good. the alpine in mine just is so much better looking than a lot of the systems i have seen, not as flashy in my opinion.

do you disable the Alpine's internal amplifier, or do you run amplification out of your Alpine through the Bose amp, then to the speakers?
According to Crutchfield:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-mBU4RZa5sAf/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=280150&tab=detailed_info&i=500CDA9856#Tab
Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is connected and the built-in amplifier is not used, removing power from the built-in amplifier will improve the sound quality.
I'm under the impression that running the alpine outputs straight through to the Bose amp without a converter or without disabling the internal amp via the Power IC Off feature could potentially damage the Bose amp.

i am not sure what i do with the power coming out of the alpine. will have to check, see if i can remember
thats what i was thinking, when the installed no one mentioned that the internal amp could cause problems, even before i would play with the power ic it didnt change any thing, if i remember it would just shut the bose amp off and just play through 2 speakers really low? it seems to be working now, not sure for how long, lol, yes i turned the power ic on and off and nothing changed, which means the bose amp wasnt working. it actually started working again, so i took it out checked the fuse, it was good, changed it anyway, put it back in, it made popping sounds when i turned it on and off, but now it seems to be fine, could it just of been the weather, it rained a lot that week, i sealled up my trunk real good because i found a leak on the other side. water?could of just been the cold weather?

The Bose speakers in the W202 are excellent speakers for its time. For example, the ones in the front doors people are fooled as a 6.5"...this is actually their famous 4.5" Helical Voice Coil driver as found in their home audio 901 speakers. They are in a ported enclosure which also contains acoustic cotton...the bass is equal to a 6.5".
With a aftermarket deck of course, it will sound better....however it is a beautiful system for STOCK and engineered for the car.

does anyone know what the specs are on the OEM head unit - S/N ratio, THD%, etc? Or on the Bose amp?

I think the BOSE amp was close to 200W at 2ohms for 8 speakers.
where is the exact location of the Bose amp?

under the carpet on the left rear quarter panel, it is a black box with a bunch of fins on it.
