Key problems

Well i have the standard one button switchblade key. My problem is that i have to be no more than 6 feet away from the rear view mirror. The range sucks, and what is the red light that comes on when you hold the button?? Can i open this key up and do some beefing up with a newer IR led? Or is it just maby batteries..

My '97 C 280 has this problem. I believe it's due to the tinted windows. The '94 C 280 I had before, without tinted windows was much better. There is a low battery indication that you can check. Count the quantity of blinks of the green or red light after you press the button. If its over ten times you probably could replace the batteries.
