View Full Version : New Wheels Over Winter???

So the car is going away the first sign of snow, this weekend, maybe next......

I plan on having some larger time consuming mods done over this winter. One of the things I need is a set of forged wheels. After alot of thought I've decieded on a set of 17"s due to performance and rim saving(bad roads here)

My current setup is the stock config with a little more rubber:
17x7.5/35et - 17x8.5/30et
225/45/17 - 255/40/17

The issue I'm trying to figure out is how wide I can go in the rear. My current first pick is a set of Iforged race series. I want a reverse lip config. which is only available in 17x8 - 17x10. I think the 10's would look sick in the rear with a 3in reverse lip. I have seen 17x10's on a 202 but I'm unsure of the backspacing and tires.

My current rear is a 8.5in 30et with a 255 rubber. They rubbed the outside fender a good amount requiring me to do extensive grinding and refinishing of the rear fender lips. I now have a tiny bit of clearance and the tires don't rub anywhere. A smaller tire is not something I'm interested in as I need everybit of traction as I still don't have enough grip on acceleration. still with me.....

So the current setup in the rear just barely works. So one would quickly think a wider rim would be worse. Here are my thoughts. A 10in rim would yeild 1.5in more width at the rim edge. The tire width however remains the same. Once mounted the tire sidewall should be not neccesarly be stretched but it won't be as vertical as it is on the 8.5in wheel. So if the tires inner bead is stretched a bit wider to accomodate the rim it shouldn't matter as much as the tread itself(the outermost part rubbing the fender) remains the same.

Backspacing is also in this equation. With the above in mind, in relation to the tread width/rim width the backspacing will pull most of the tire into the fender well. I have seen 17x10 wheels for a 202 set up with 40et backspacing. If so.

+29mm inside edge and +9mm outside egde.

With this said, a majority of the extra width will be pulled inside with only 9mm going out. Because the majority goes inside 29 over 9 the actual center of the tire tread would be farther in correct? This should pull a little of the tread edge further in as the bead edge nugging out +9mm. Basically I'm visualizing the top of the tire pulling in slightly with the rim edge pushing out a bit. THe sidewall of my tire also never touched, just the tread. The tire will always be centered on the wheel so if the wheel majority goes in the tire must follow right??

I'm dying to make this work, I dont' want to hack up my fender more, and I don't want to order a set of wrong wheels. Any thoughts about my rant????
