Wow. that was a pretty catastrophic failure! You can usually feel/hear them going out because they get out of balance. This is why preventative maintenance is necessary. He's lucky nothing got thrown in to the passenger compartment!

How would I know if its bad on my 202? The weird thing is...when starting off in the mornings in W MODE on the transmission...when backing out of the driveway and then moving off in D...the car moves and then makes a slight JERK forward (like it engaged too late). In S MODE it doesnt do this.
Is this normal?

as far as I know, if you are a careful driver and dont floor it but drive it smoothly this wont happen . but if your racing the hell out of the car, this is only the beginning!
last week I pulled apart an RX300 engine because two of the rods snapped and found there way out of the crankcase - and inside the oil pan was a nice Aluminium & oil slushy!

Nope, its normal wear, for the front flex disk that is. The rear one rarely has to get replaced.

hm I think I have something similar.. where I live I have to go up a hill, off my drive way and in the morning its usually hard to get a gap so you gota give it some left foot.. you guys do drive with your left foot ?
she takes off up the hill... when I back off the pedal ... 2-3 seconds later THUD like a kick in the back from the tranny.. like it changed with out engageing a clutch.. and late.
I choose the W or S mode depending on how wet the road is.. lately its been Wet.
It ONLY happens once, and only on the hill, and in the morning.. this has happened to me so far 4 times..
seems to be on the exact same point on the road as well..
this hill eats cars for breakfast I asure you... but fortunatly Im pulling on to it just before its brow heh..

Ive heard of stories of them letting go and hitting the trans tunnel and then blowing the air bags in the car.. the crash sensor is basicall right there!!.. sitting on the top of the transmission tunnel.
make sure to check them. if there is any play in them.. replace them.

Mmmm, lol, I had sort of the same issue and that seemed to be the source.... or maybe I used the wrong term for whatever those bushings are.... :D

The rear felx disc rarely needs replacing. I had to replace the front one only.

just crawled under mine today due to some vibration and clicking i've noticed when coming up to a stop sign, and sure enough the front flex disc is cracked and ready for replacement.
has anyone recently replaced the flex discs, or even just the front? i don't have my air tools anymore now that i moved back to california, and i'm pretty limited on tools period for that matter.
how hard were the bolts to crack loose? do they need to be replaced with certain torque values, or do you just crank them back on like they're lug nuts? recall what size socket was used?

I would be curious too.. not that I have checked my front one but I figure if the front one is past due, prehaps do them both if they arnt expensive..

The M10 bolts should be torqued to 40nm/30lbs and the M12 bolts should be torqued to 60/44.
I have never done this, so I can't offer any real advice except to say that the Haynes manual is very emphatic that you make alignment marks so that you put everything back together in the same relative position in order to prevent any imbalance problems.
No doubt the experts here will chime in with real-world advice!

$100 seems around the average online price although Importec has the front for a bit less at $94. Autohauz has the rear for $64 which is much cheaper than most places.

TIA
