I get a single knock or click coming from the front (wheels?) when I turn in either direction, but only while stepping on the brakes as I am turning. If I turn without stepping on the brakes, no noise. Sounds kind of like a metallic clunk, and it only happens once per turn (i.e., not a repetitive sound).
I may also be noticing a little more play or "softness" than usual in the steering, but this could also be attributable to my being paranoid and hypersensitive because of the knocking sound.
What do you guys think?
one of the joints is shot. replace them. it will just get louder but probably wont' break off anytime soon

Do you mean CV joints? Also, what should I expect the dealer to want for this repair...or should I avoid the dealer on this one?

Does it only happen after you have changed from reverse to going forward? If so, it could be as simple as your brake pads shifting within the caliper.

It definitely also happens sometimes when I back out of a parking spot, and then also when I shift into drive and start moving forward. Generally, I'm almost always also turning the wheel while maneuvering out of the spot both forwards and backwards, as well.

Check your front lower ball jionts is what I think he meant. They go bad alot. The brakes are another good idea. The steering issue sounds like its the ball joints, about 100 in parts and an hour to put in. Alinement is good but not manditory.

i had to change my ball joints too, and before i did, when i turned my wheel and and with the car rolling and my foot on the brake, i heard metal knocking sounds...i took it to my mechanics and my ball joints were pretty much !@#$#$%
