View Full Version : Which Subs?

What kind of sound would I get out of 2 -10s vs the 1-12" I have now?
I dont want too much anymore of the club shaking bass...just richer more "middy" bass but still kind of low enough.
The stock BOSE has great sound (to me!) and the midrange/bass is good however once you really crank it up it cuts the bass out mostly so I added the sub I have now to have lows always there and of course, more bass.
But, sometimes Im not too crazy for the ground shaking, club bass.

2 10s is way better than 1 12

if you want more mid-bass, check out a set of the iridium 8.3 drivers made by DLS
comes with an 8" woofer, 6.5" midrange, 1" tweeter as a 3-piece component set. they sound flawless, and would make a great replacement for your rear-deck speakers.
depends on your price range - generally two 10"s will greatly out perform a single 12", but the 12 will generally have a lower optimum frequency response. it's not to say that 10s can't hit low, but their optimum response is usually 15-25hz higher on average.
also depends on the sub itself and the box. If you are looking for nice clean bass, not to rumbly, then you'd want 2 10s in a small sealed box. That's what I have, but it's not enough for me. I just stumbled upon this setup and haven't gotten around to a new one.
On the flip side, if you want enough bass to make you sick, then get a 12 (or a pair!) in a large vented/ported enclosure.
Either way the enclosure should be made to manufacturer's specs.
I like to build my boxes with an angle (to eliminate sound waves cancelling each other), and fill them with polyester fiber (poly-fil, to slow down the sound waves - "tricking" them to sound like a larger enclosure.
My main problem is i listen to anything from sublime to eazy-e, marley to hendrix, red hot chili peppers, disturbed, ice cube, tenacious d, tupac, STP....you get the point.
I think my next setup will be 2 12's and 2 8's.

Thanks guys! Perhaps next summer I'l switch to 2-10s.
Would 2 8" subs (only) in the rear shelf be good or better than a box in the trunk?

can only agree to you on this to a certain degree, LOL! sorry man.
like rman said...it all depends on the sub, box and space. i know for a fact that my single 12" sub is louder than most dual 12" sub set-ups. and i even beat a car with 3 10" subs. yes there are some that are louder but i haven't come across many cars that are louder and cleaner in person!

Perhaps the edition of 2 more Bose 6.5" woofers (4 woofer array together) will do the trick.

I think this depends on the subwoofer itself. Certain brand 10" is not low enough for the music nowadays. Having 2 of them will not help hitting the lower bass frequency.

Yea Im sure 2 10s is just as heavy as 1 15. My bro has one 10" KICKER square with a matched box and it sounds really good. I'd recomend two of them. whatever you get make sure it has a box that is made for it. A good sound shop will know about it.
