Just had a few quick questions.
I just purchased the car last night and absolutely love it. It was owned previously by a local business man who took great care of it. It has 134K miles on it and looks brand new.
That said, even though it is running PERFECTLY. The check engine light came on this morning.
Any thoughts? I have 2 days for my state's lemon laws. Just want to make sure i'm not screwed. I love the car though and hope it's nothing big.
As I said, I can step on the gas and it responds perfectly, shifts great. You name it, absolutely no issues. Someone mentioned possibly the gas cap on another forum and it is a possibility as I was able to tighten it maybe another half inch to an inch. I turned the car on for 10 seconds after and the light stayed on though.
I'll drive it on my lunch and see if it goes away.
Any thoughts guys?

Definitely get an OBD scanner on it to see what triggered the CEL.
Also have someone give the car a look to make sure there are no leaks...such as headgasket, transmission, rear differential.
Also have a look at the flex-disk and make sure it's not cracked.
While you are under there, check the front suspension, such as the ball-joints and bushings. They wear pretty fast.
Good luck!

As Kameraguy said, get a scanner/reader hooked up to it and find out what code it is sending. You can go into most AutoZone and similar auto parts stores and they will usually come out and scan your codes for you for free.

I had the same issue a while back, car ran perfectly but CEL was on... it was an O2 sensor code... amazingly it even passed smog. i just reset the ecu and took it to the test shop.
Unexplained mysteries... unless someone has an explaination

if you could turn your gas cap that much.. i would suspect you left it loose after a fill up, you probably have code po455- major leak in purge system.
you can disconnect the battery for a lil bit to clear the code.. or take it to a shop, they may check and clear the code for free.. maybe tke it back to where you bought it from.
but if you just leave it and drive the car.. it will go out in a couple days. the next time the cars computer does a self check of the purge system.. it will see everything is okay and turn off the light.
did the gas gauge reserve light flash at all before the engine light came on?

Well guys here's an update:
First off, I took it to shucks and they found out it was a miss fire on cyl #5.
So I replaced the sparkplug (it was in horrible shape) and then cleared the comp. Code was gone. YAY.
Well I am then driving to the dealer because I didn't have the code for my audio system, on the way home I notice the car feels a major hesitation around 2K+ when I give it more than 25% throttle.
I also sometimes hear a fairly loud CLUNK just in front and below me.
I feel like I'm only running on 2 cyl half the time and that I shouldn't be pushing the throttle beyond 20%.
CEL is back on, so I will take it to shucks in the morning.
I'm just really bummed. I LOVE this car, aside from these issues it's a dream to drive.
The dealer says they can take it in on tuesday, but unfortunately it is not under warranty. I bought it last thursday "as is". I'm hoping they will man up.
They told me their tech gave it a very in-depth inspection and replaced what needed to be replaced. What I find funny is that every plug that I was able to pull (the bolts on #2 and #6 are broken so we need to find another way to pull those) were in VERY POOR shape.
I'm still not sure if it is a motor or transmission problem -hopefully the scan tomorrow will tell.
I don't know if there are any local guys that would want to meet up and at least take it for a spin with me to give me some educated insight?
I hope it all works out regardless. Aside from being screwed on a car deal, I'd hate to not be able to drive this thing. I'm continually impressed with everything (that works) about it, but especially it's cornering ability.
Thanks guys, and sorry for the long post

Sparks Plugs / Ignition Wires / Fuel Injectors <- Have those checked out, I doubt its a transmission probably.

damn, sorry to hear about that, but hopefully it will be a one time thing, simple and easy to fix...202's are great cars when they are functioning right and no lights are lite on the dashboard.

Yeah we'll see what's up today hopefully when dena comes out.
Thanks for the support too guys, I can tell this is going to be a good group of people to get involved with.
And I'm sure you are right about the cars. Like I said I want to keep the car, even if the dealership said it had problems and they could put me in a different car... I love this thing.
We definately have to get a northwest get together soon too, I'd really like to meet everyone and see some of your rides. Maybe get some ideas on aftermarket ideas once I fix my probs :D

I just have to say what a cool guy. I really appreciate you coming out today and hanging out. It was great to find out finally what's really wrong with the car too.
We all definately have to do a get together sometimes soon -I'd be more than happy to host one.
In regards to the car, we found the following codes:
0301
0305
0300
So apparently I need new coils and wires.
I guess it could have been much worse :)

Nice to meet you as well, had a great time talking.
Anyway, coils and/or wires might be the main suspect. You said you changed your plugs, so I guess we can rule those out.
Let's hear what the dealer has to say.

So the dealer got it into the shop early today -found that it was the coils and will have the car ready by tomorrow.
Yay, can't wait to get back to driving it!

Yeah I hear you guys. Next thing on my list will be a complete inspection. I got a quote for $175 from Mercedes Garage in bellevue. I'll probably take it to them next month or feb.
Anything else at 132K I should do? Dennis I think you mentioned flushing the transmission and new fluid? What kidn of cost am I looking at for that?

I'd do some basics first, change oil, coolant flush, fule filter, air filter, cabin filter, a few other things I cannot seem to recall.
All of those you should be able to do yourself. Thne with the inspection, you can determine what needs to be done, after those basics.
edit: check the sticky I posted about W202 Maintenance in this Repairs Section.
