I was checking my sparkplugs yesterday. This was the first time I had to do this on this car. Everything went fine until I tried to disconnect the smallest diameter connection on the coil (the one the faces toward the back of the 2.3L 4 cyl engine). I tried pulling straight out and pulling as well as with a twist like for the spark plug boots themselves. I was afraid I was going to break something if I applied much more force. Since I was able to get enough slack on all the cabling and pull the whole coil plus coil connector out, I just left it connected. Is there a trick to this? I would just like to know for future reference.

Thanks!

I want to change my spark plugs too. I forgot about these coil packs. Are these necessary to remove/change. What does the coil pack do?

The coil packs are part of the distributer-less ignition -- They deliver spark instead of a distributer.

So do we need to change them when changing spark plugs?

Nope they last a long time, they're pricey too. One of mine went bad last year at 165k miles and it was not only pricey but a hassle to replace because I didn't have a lift.

sometimes the coil ends stick to the spark plugs due to high heat, so it might be hard to pull the coils apart from the plugs. no worries, just pull and twist as much(or little) as you can, and they will come off.
