i started my car this morning got in and started to drive and noticed the coolant light is on. i go home and notice the light is gone. start driving again and turns back on and stays on. i pull over and check the coolant level and it is perfect. no smell of coolant. engine does not over heat and operates in the right temperture range.

what i am trying to find out is this a comman problem. is the coolant light just for the coolant resivoir, as in being low or can it be something else. where is the sensor located. pic's would be greatly appreciated

thanks for help in advance

Your coolant probably IS low. You may have checked it after it dumped some into the overflow/fill tank. Check it a few more times at different intervals.

I would also fill it a bit above full, if your light DOES go out, you know it was low. It isnt like oil where too much will damage anything. You would only be adding a 1/2 gallon at the most anyway.

i have checked it when it has been hot and when it has been cold. it also now is going on and off. checked it about ten times today. coolant has been at the right level. also have not added any coolant.

coolant level sensor failure is a very common issue on benzes. new one costs about $30, and takes 2 minutes to replace.

also, this happened to me, have you been running your heater, the fluid as the mechanics at the ford dealer my dad works at said that the fluid goes into the heater core and if your fluid was sorta low to begin with than it will suck some of it out of the resivoir, and maybe the low level light will turn on, happened to me

replaced the sensor and the light is still on. looks like it might be the coolant expansion tank.
