I just thought I'd let you guys know about something in case it's never been mentioned here before:
I have a blown driver's side speaker on my Bose system in my car. It's the one that goes in the door, 4.25", I believe. I called the dealer to ask how much they wanted for the part and I got this insane quote for $275. Well, I expected high prices, but DAMN! I e-mailed Bose and told them the situation and how I thought $275 for a replacement speaker was rediculous (I did it courteously) and they told me to get them a part # off the back. I'm now getting a speaker to replace it directly from Bose for $45 (includes shipping for the new speaker). Just wanted to let you all know in case you end up with blown speakers in your Bose system.

Can you post those part numbers?

Thank you for the follow up information we do have part number #149333 available. The cost is $40.00 for each speaker (plus $5.25 for shipping) and you would need to send in a check made payable to Bose Corporation to: Bose Corporation

The part number I got from the back of the speaker (front driver's door) was 1493336. In the quote above is the Bose part number of the speaker she says will be a direct replacement for it. I'll let you know when I get the part. Unfortunately you can't use a credit card to purchase it over the phone from them, yet, so I have to literally mail them a check and wait for the part to come in.
damn, that might be a good option. seems both my front speakers are blown, so a new set and some bass blockers ought to bring that shit to life.
with bass blockers i could crank up the bass and maximize my trunk-thump, without endangering my door speakers. AWESOME!

I don't have a digicam, but if I can find one before my speaker gets here, I will gladly take a picture of it. If you really want to see it, just remove the speaker cover (there's only one screw on the bottom to remove) and take it out yourself. The screws that hold it on place are those star-pattern screws, but you can probably get them out with an alan wrench.

Ya...seen the driver once...its pretty small but puts out big sound!:)
I recall it being the same as their home drivers such as the 901 model, Bose which has 9 of those drivers.

The phone # is (800)231-2673.
Also, due to the site being down my previous post was ereased. There was a user who asked about my speaker's status and I wanted to re-post that I sent the check off last Thurs. and will let you all know when it gets here and I have it installed.

Ok, I have received my speaker from Bose. it looks exactly like what I replaced. Though, not an OEM Mercedes part, it is the spec and design that goes in there. I fired up the sound system and everything sounded great. Although, it'll let you know what the status of your other speakers are, which can be a good thing and a bad thing (for your ears). Overall, everything sounds back to normal, but careful listening revealed that my passenger's side door speaker probably has a weak cone and could go the same way as the driver's side at anytime. But, for $45, I don't really care. It's cheap.
For those of you that want new ones from Bose, my reccommendation is that you take every number off the back of the speaker(s) you want to replace, e-mail it to them, and let them figure out which one is the correct part number. If I can get my hands on a digicam, I will take some pics, but I promise that you don't need visual aides and instructions to replace the front and rear door speakers.

Sounds good...literally.
However it is odd that the speaker drivers are going.....depends how hard you drive them I guess and what you play.

Not really, these Bose speakers are paper cones...and paper cones wear out. the speaker didn't blow from driving it hard, it blew from normal use over 8 years.

Mmmm then I guess the 1st owner of my car never used the radio 'cause I turn the bass all the way up and all speakers sound great.

Hmm but 8yrs isnt too bad for a speaker paper or not. Not arguing though. I noticed the system has a active input in which when cranked to its limits it cuts and controls the bass so it doesnt damage or blow the speakers.

Yeah true. All Bose systems have that bass cut to prevent damage. That's the reson I bought a sub for the trunk. It helps relieve the pressure from the Bose speakers and keeps the bass at full punch at higher volumes. The thing is, I really don't abuse the sound system in my car. I don't turn it up often. This just doesn't seem out of the ordinary to me. I had both my rear deck Bose 6X9's blow in my 1993 Maxima in about 1999. I wish I knew then what I know now cause I wouldn't have had to pay $400 to replace them.:( The speaker itself doesn't appear to be severely damaged. I was looking at it earlier today and then again a little while ago and you can feel that the cone is weaker (compared to the new one I just bought).

Well this advice came in good for a friend of mine! He blew one of his speakers and he ordered it from them...the 4.5". They did take credit card over the phone.
Damn huge magnets!
