From what I can tell, there is NO technical reason why the C36 wiring harness (HWA 202 540 03 32) cannot be replaced with a 1995 C280 wiring harness (202-540-40-32).

The 1995 C36 and 1995 C280 use the exact same and amount of sensors, throttle body (I don't have ASR on my C36), and ECU pinouts.

The C36 AMG wiring harness is about $1K, and the C280 wiring harness is about $500 (HALF!).

Am I missing something here ?

I'm 99.99% sure, that since I have an EARLY C36 engine with a serial number below F159969, that I am suppose to use the 202.540.40.32 pn# (cheaper!) even though I have option code# 957 in my DataCard.

FWIW, HWA 202 540 03 32 is for engine sn# starting at F159970 and up to the end of MY95.

Am I missing something ?

I just changed the rear wheel bearing on my 96 C36. The bearings were the same but the hubs were not. The C36 was $218 and not in stock. The everything else one was $88 and on the shelf. The only thing I could find was mine had a untapped hole for some reason that I count not find. The CV fit, the rim fit, and it still had the small screw to hold the rotor on. My coworkers said the AMG one was super light wieght to make my car go vroom!

I work at a Toyota dealer and we have the same parts as Lexus but ours are cheaper.

i just through this trouble where they sent me wrong wiring harness from mercedesshop.com for c280 and i have c36. i paid close to 1k and after i complained guy told me no refunds or pay another 400 for c36. i wont even go how upset i am but anyways
i will let you know the part number tonite.
but i do have ASR so i dont know if it makes a difference. all connectors fit EXCEPT rubber mould that goes where sparkplugs are does not fit. also the plastic wire holder on the side between throttle and engine also does not alight with clips.
but so far the car runs except i my accelerator feels lazy and car does not down shift until i push accelerator pretty far down (i am not talking till kickdown switch but close to it).
i posted regarding that problem got some answers but still need to stop by mechanic to check it out. i pray its not wiring cause i will be really upset

redc36,

PM me your VIN# and let me predict what's the right part number.

I successfully used a C280 wiring harness on my 1995 C36 without ASR.

i was going to say, i'm pretty sure the c36 is a bored out m106 from an e320, and they just changed to the diesel crank among other internals. the wiring harness should work on all M104s from the W202 and W210. pretty sure the M104 was never used in the W208s, only the M111 and the updated aluminum V6s

The C36 engine is a bored & stroked M104 engine.

The only issue with the 1994-1995 C280 vs. the C36 engine harness, is that it is a tight fight with the valve cover that's used on the C36 vs. the C280.

This engine wiring harness are killing me. I just change my 2nd wiring harness and it cost me over $1g for parts alone. :(

The C280 harness is about 1/2 the cost of the AMG, and it worked for me.

The following link has the part numbers (item 5, item 10 or item 15) for the M104 engine. As you can see there are lots of variations according to the engine number, LH drive, RH drive, auto, or year model number etc, etc:

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=202028&M=104%2E941&GA=722%2E328722%2E424722%2E604722%2E605722%2E629&GM=717%2E441&CT=M&cat=520&SID=54&SGR=160&SGN=05

I had my original 1996 C36 engine wiring harness repaired to better than new by "doin12volts" for US$400.

Please post his contact info.

I kept the old one, perhaps he can repair it.

Digging up an old thread here, but I've finally decided to tackle this project on my Feb/95-built C36. My car has the 202 540 0332 harness and I was curious how the OP's swap worked out. I grabbed an updated harness from a local '95 C280, but as I take my harness out I can see the "new" one is missing connections (smog pump). Also, is "doin12volt" still active anywhere? Hasn't logged into the other site since '12. Thanks!
