yeah i've had that problem but the magazine wasn't inserted properly.. hmm.. don't you love it how sometimes it just decides to pop out while you're driving? (i have an aftermarket CD changer so maybe the MB ones are better)...
but if it's in there correctly.. i'm not sure. Check the cables that connect to it, if they're showing than unplug them and re-connect them, see if that does anything.
I have a 99 C230K, and I had this issue with mine too. One way I found to make it work is to hold the magazine down until it is done inventorying the magazine. That would usually fix the issue for a couple of weeks.

I'm at a loss on what to do with my changer. The HU reads "NO MAGAZINE" even if there is one in it.
I've searched around and found one suggestion to remove the fuse for the radio.

I'm itching to try this one last step before giving up BUT I'm not sure if doing this would reset the radio and ask for the code. I got the car used and manual (including the radio code) did not come with it. I don't want to end up without both the radio and cd changer. Any ideas?

i have a good idea, yank that stock stuff out and buy a nice in dash unit that does MP3 and ipod . there would be no reason to have a changer in the trunk then.

heya buddy this is what i do on my c43 99, take out the cartridge when your tape deck is on when you listen to the radio or tape, then push the cd box in the wechsler so you hear it when it reads all your cds, press audio source on tapedeck for cd use ,when you turn of the engine let the sterio turn of by key never the on off button always let the stereo die with the turn off ignition
