I'm really considering cutting them this weekend but I have a 95 So I don't think I can cut the same # of coils to get the same kind of drop as the infamous OCK with a great drop on stock cut springs.
Anyone have a 95 with cut springs? Brand of springs, # of coils cut from top or bottom, and maybe a pic would be great.. Thanks in advance for all the help guys..

PS. Please only post info to my inquiry and not comments to keep the thread clean and maybe help others in the future as well. Thanks again.. -Bryan

Ahahahha, How did I know some of you could not resist.

Anyway I already have an extra set of Eibachs but would like to give cutting a shot as I doubt the eibachs will give me the drop I want...

I did search and no one really states where they cut the top or the bottom of the springs on a 95?

I like how people still talk shit on cutting springs...jesus people! I have gone for over 18 months now with zero issues, why don't you try it before you all start hating on it? What's the difference between cut springs and aftermarket springs? NOTHING...if you cut your bumpstop (like you should when you lower your car), it will ride comparable to stock. These cars are not Hondas, they do not bounce all over the place.

I had cut stock springs on my C36 it was the worst, ghettoest ride ever, then I put on some H&Rs and it wasent low enough so i cut them too, the ride again suffered.

Now on my C43 I just have H&R springs ( no cut), its a dream compared

So there you go, you want my educated opinion on cut springs, i gave it to you. its ghetto

If you really want to cut them, the preudated cars 93-97? springs have flat tops correct? If so, cut the non flat end

did you cut the bumpstop at all when you cut the springs?

hmm...sorry your ride suffered...in the C43, with cut Brabus springs, it rides great! My car is stiff, but only because I have not cut the bumpstops. My problems will soon be alleviated though :p

i never cut springs. what are you guys talking about cutting the bump stops? haha

jnolte

when you lower your car, your suspentions travel is decreased. The cars shocks will alot of time hit the bump stop going over dips or hard turns. This is very uncomfortable, you can feel it hit. So when you trim the bump stop, it makes up for the lost room from shorter springs.

Its like a rubber pad thing, hard to explain.

hmmm...soo is cutting the bump stops only like for stock shocks and such? my car has bilsteins sports lowered on B+G's, do i need to worry about it?

i have a 94, i bought some new springs which were very similar to stock and cut them, so i could keep my stock springs for spare.
i would guess this will be very similar to what you suggest

on my 94 the top of the spring is ground flat and the bottom is still coiled, cut off the coiled end as this sits into a spring groove.
I would cut in these steps
1-1.5 coils cut first time and put back in and see how it is, then if u still wana go lower cut but 1/2 coils at a time and put back together,
cut the bumpstops when you make the first cut, i cut my bumpstops down by about 2/3rds,
you will probebly need to do some guard work to stop rubbing or take out the plastic guard liners, also try and get some adjustable camber arms to reduce rear end camber and save tires.
get the camber arms early, dont procrastanate like me and fu#k a few sets of expensive tires first :(

hope that helps

ASnother trick is make sure you when you cut, you buy number one pads. That way, if you are "too low" for your tastes, you can just buy larger pads, and you're not screwed. If you make your car too low on number 5 pads, that's a different story.

i dunno, i've cut a ton of springs and never had any issues. It's not really any different from getting aftermarket springs, although aftermarket springs are usually stiffer.

When you cut your stock springs, as long as you cut them properly, all it'll do is #1 make them shorter/lower, and #2 slightly increase the spring rate/make them stiffer.

how low you go makes a big difference in ride quality as well, since the lower you are, the less travel you have in your suspension.

Also, consider that the shocks are still stock length, and are not meant to control the spring rate other than stock.

I have koni springs and cut the fronts down a bit, all on stock shocks. No complaints with ride quality, although my "sport" shocks are a tiny bit too soft for my taste

I cut my stck springs and I have no complaints what so ever. The H&R's were very saggy and not good to use in the front especially with 18" monoblocks. The car sagged so low that hitting a pothole resulted in the front rim damaging my front fender. This is even with #4 pads installed in the front.

Stck springs cut FTW I have no complaints.

your h&R springs were softer than your stock springs?

great info guys. Thanks for all the posts.
If those of you with cut springs don't mind posting a pic here showing your car and stating which (model / year), springs and # of coils cut as well as pads used that would be great for those of us that really want to dump are cars or just bring the stance down a bit.

Great tip OCk, unfortunately my local dealer has to special order the shims so it won't come in till tuesday but I think I'm just going to go for it this weekend anyway..

Thanks Jnolte, for clarifying which end to cut...

front springs cut 1/4 coil

I would like to cut another 1/2 coil all around to slam it down but I don't want to risk rubbing, driveability, and killing tires

I will never use H&R springs on an application like this again unless the car has Mcpherson struts and is a BMW.

The H&R's also sucked on my Talon but work beautiful on my
BMW's. Go figure!

When you cut 1 coil or 1/2 a coil on the stck springs ,the spring rate increases making them stiffer. I love the way my car rides and handles now, much better than both aftermarket setups i had.

94 c280, factory sport shocks
My springs are brand cobra springs.
cut 1 coil front(cant remember wot number pad), and about 2 coils rear (number 4 spring pad in rear).
also had to get rear shocks shortened to keep it captive (very important)
straightened rear camber, but front camber still a bit above 2 degrees so hard on inside of tire.

Awesome pictures OCK... Your car is my goal.. Ahahha, Just can't afford it right now though.

Ok guys I just did the work last weekend just haven't had the time to post up in a while because I've been so busy. The car looks great. I cut 2 coils up front #1 pads ( I think, there were no little bumps on the little flaps on the edge, Maybe #0?) and 1.75 in the back #2 pads. Car sits flat but the wheel well gap in the back is smaller than the fronts. Will post pics later

Its actually a bit lower than I wanted but I did 1 coil first on one side and it looked like it didn't do much so I cut 2 on the other side. BIG MISTAKE... Remember that the car will compensate for the coil and try to even it out, so you can't see how low it will really be till you do both sides evenly.

I may switch to #3 up front and # 5 in the rear..

Does anyone know of any custom alignment shops in San Diego area? If it costs less than getting front and rear camber kits I may just go with a custom alignment.

The Toe is adjustable stock right? Rear toe looks crazy and want to save my tires as much as I can. Thanks guys. Keep the pics and info comming. I'll post mine shortly... - Bryan

best alignments in town are done by true-line in kearny mesa. It's all old-skool, using a glass cutter and spray paint. no fancy laser Hunter racks or anything like that

as far as custom i don't know anyone who does that, like bending shit?

Bryan858
04-04-2007, 05:32 PM
thanks rman,
I actually heard of them before.. But yeah, I'm looking for a place that can get everything to factory specs by bending the arms or whatever they do. I have seen some arms for pretty cheap so I'm thinking if ever anything goes wrong I can always get a new set...

All the help is greatly appreciated...
