Have you looked carefully at some of your old dealer/warranty receipts? In the beginning, they printed both the chassis and engine number on mine in addition to the VIN.

There is a Russian site that lets you input your VIN and then gives you details. It is part of the same site that provides the parts catalog. I know the link to the catalog (http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb0.asp?TP=1) but not to the VIN entry. Maybe someone here can help you out with the link.

Are you possibly really just after the specific engine and chassis version number for your car (versus the body and engine serial numbers)? If so, those are displayed at the link above (e.g. 202.024 (body) and 111.975 (engine) for a 99 C230 Kompressor). Usually that infomation will give the parts guy all he needs.

Wow. I just wasn't sure that a vin on a Russian site would mean my car would be stolen. I'm so glad you pointed that out. What would they have done without my 94 c220 base model?

If the Russian site already knows all the legitimate Mercedes VIN numbers, how would putting your VIN in as a query cause your vehicle or VIN to be stolen?

Yep. It is all in there already. Nothing new for them to "steal."

Ahhh...I see the problem here. I was referring specifically to the Russian Mercedes Club which has a VIN decode service:
