I think thats a tough one cause we would all have our different opinions based on the cars we drive, but i'm lovin my 97 c280 havent had hardly any major problems with it yet.

I would have to go with the 2000 C230 Kompressor. It delivers great power, has the tiptronic transmission, updated ingition and fuel injection system making them exteremly easy to upgrade the crank pulley for more power, and are the most complete all around in terms of eliminated problems, sound proofing, and creature comforts.

forgot to mention they get as high as 24-28mpg with mixed city and highway with "spirited" driving :D

I would agree on the 99-00' 230K.

wish I had one

but my personal favorite has to be the 97' C36!

only the model year 2000s had tiptronic.

the gearbox is based on the porsche "paddleshift". you just tap it left to downshift, and tap it right to select the next gear. it's a lot more responsive than manually running through the gears imo, and it feels much like a clutchless stickshift.

the transmission in the 2000 C230K is what's used in the CLK platform iirc, and its much more durable. I have a '99 C230k, and I put about $3k into my trans when it blew out, to make it stronger for a mosselman turbo/supercharger kit. the 97-99 5-speed automatics are like russian roulette if you drive with a lead foot.

Plus, on all the forums ive been on for 202 the C230K had the least posts in terms of problems. The C280 is every 2nd post with an issue with the engine regardless of year.

BUT, when buying a 202 I did like the C280 more due to its smooooth ride, quiet, felt like a true benz should feel. However I still took the C230 cause of its bulletproof engine and gas consumption, even though I call it the "traktor" cause it sounds like one.:D

OK This isnt working out because we think what we drive is the best, i mean i have a 99 280 i think is great. but i never drove anything els but if i had to guess i would say......................... maby a 280 or 230k of the redesinged year thay both are have equal performance and economy even tho most of the 202's are underpowerd and kinda slow...........but for how much thay weigh and their size engines their not too bad,

Also comes down to personal preference.........

For example automatic boxes, tiptronic (or even telepathic) to me are so dull and plain to drive i'd never get one, even if the manuals were to have problems :)

as much as i love manual gearboxes...and ofcourse to me they have got to be the most fun to drive, however with the traffic i fight through everyday, a manual car is too much of a hassel....

This is an absolute waste of a thread, cos everyone believes that their 202 is the best. It's as simple as that.

I love my 280 because it's a straight 6, which in my view is one of the best engines ever made.
It's gearbox also has a very simple electronics, therefore less to go wrong.
Furthermore, it's a fact that Daimler-Chrysler went through a 'cost cutting period' between 1996 and 2004, and as a result of this, all models between 1997 and 2004 were affected...

the original: 1994 c280, 4speed w/o overdrive, traction control or anything just an awesome sounding powerful engine. oh and it has 2 more cylinders than a 4. haha, it runs at around 3000rpm cruisin at 70-75 on the highway, good gas mileage is not this cars strong point.

I have no idea about the 230k.................but ya close race the 280 power band is from 1500 to 4300 or when the varible valve timing kicks in it moves..... but it has no topend at all and i mean notthing

professional racer vs. a daily driver same car, professional would win. he knows how to handle the car and what to do daily driver just tries to save gas. driver matters, plus u can switch the car to the fake manual.

did u ever listen to the i6 c280 even with stock exhaust close to the red line? it sounds beautiful. gets kinda high but sounds so good, even better with my magnaflow. it pulls up to the redline usually by the time im outa the first gear im goin pretty fast, i always push the button behind the pedal to. i actually didnt have one for a while. now i see what ive been missing, it was broken. i love pushin it down when getting onto the highway. it accelerates so fast. has any one done a 0-60 test on our cars? it seems so much faster than the 8seconds mercedes-benz claims on their website!!

YA my 280 (v6) sounds pretty good at redline too. It sounds like what an engine should sound like and ya it does feel quicker then 8sec. It feels like 6.5 maby. But just off topic my doesnt seem as fast as it did when i first bought it, maby im used to it or i need to get new spark plugs or somthing.

I drove a 99 C230K, 94 C220, and I currently own a 99 C280.

Out of all 3 my favorite had to be my brother's 99 C230K. I just like the sound of the supercharger and the fact it didn't guzzle gas. My 99 C280 sounds great, and I like the power it has, enough for me, but the gas it consumes is ridiculous I am lucky to get 20 mpg. It feels like everyday I am in the gas station putting another $10 in and at $2.89 a gal its not cheap!

So my vote goes to the 99-00 C230K, but once this lorinser exhaust goes on I'll pick my 99 C280 :)

I'd prefer the 230k 99-00, but on the topic of 0-60 which I think someone mentioned earlier, I got an average today of 7.2s in my near stock 230k. I had it in drive without the ASR on. My guess would be that the c280 is about the same due to same amount of torque, but I'm probably wrong on that.

I've done an 0-60 run before in my 99 230k sport and got only 9.1 seconds, that was with two medium weight people in the car and just using auto, I think you could gain a little time shifting it through the gears, especially if you could launch somehow. I tried revving the car in nuetral and dropping it in drive but the car waits until revs drop to almost 2000rpm then releases the clutch to start moving.

Never seen two tone interior?!?!?!?! Well then, we'll have to fix that.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b291/Racingman24/twotone.jpg

How's that? Sure is puuurrrrddy, idn't it? :)

As far as which is the best, my personal vote would have to go to the same thing I drive, the 2000 C230k. People always say that I claim it's the best because I have one. But it's the other way around, I have one because I feel it's best suited for what I want.

The Engine gives decent power, while still giving Excellent milage, 20-22 in town, and 26-28 on the highway.
The interior is just damn sexy.
The tranny is the updated model, with updated parts, which perform better and last longer.

All in all, it's perfect for a driver in current form.

The ONE downfall of the later model 202's is, as stated above, when Merc cut costs, they did on ALL models. And this really, really shows up on later model bodys. They used piss-poor metal, and piss-poor sealant, resulting in a Shit-ton of rust.

I personally have 5 or 6 rather large spots of rust on my car already. It's a 2000 with 120k on it. Hell, my '96 Silverado with 130k on it had less rust than my Benz. Talk about irritating.

Nelson Lago
04-17-2007, 08:16 AM
huh my 99 has one small rust stane and its kinda loud on the highways from the wind noise thats it but is the seats only two tone or the dash because im woundering f i can swap out my seats for those

First Benz
04-17-2007, 11:53 AM
Dash isn't Two tone. Only the seats and the steering wheel.

Everything else is black, with the exception of the headliner and sun visors.

So if you're lucky enough to find the two tone seats, and the rest of your interior is black, it'll look great. :)

Benzon
04-19-2007, 07:02 AM
I personally have no idea if the dealer carries parts like that , i would imagine, but i would also imagine a VERY hefty price tag to go with them. The guy that re did my liner told me that he had just done another Mercedes for a lady and and she need new visors and the junker wanted like 250 for one and the dealer wanted like some crazy amount. Don't know if theres any truth to it but i can see it being true.

Just hit up google maps and type in your address then search for upholstery near your address. According to the guy that did mine there very annoying to do as the roof liner is all one piece and must be bent to get out as when there installed at the factory they go in through the windshield hole, so its a very annoying job as after they pull it out they must bend it to get it back in causing wrinkles which then must be ironed out. I paid 275 although was quoted cheaper other places this guy seemed to know what he was talking about, if i had needed to redo the slider it was about another 100 on top of whatever else. Also was told that the visors are not able to be reupholstered. Sorry for rambling.

i like my 00c230k, except for some sc bugs im trying to figure out right now.

the touch-shift trans isnt great; the shifts come like a couple seconds after you bump it. i leave it in auto mode all the time.

dont ever rev your car in neutral and drop it into drive for launch. thats so fuckin stupid. you can brake-torque it, but thats still pretty hard on your drivetrain.

ive got a couple rust spots on my car, the cheaper paint definitely shows.

the touch-shift trans isnt great;

I also despise the fact that shifts come liek 2 sec after you tap it...
However, i do think it comes in handy for forcing downshifts

yeah, i think that it's only great in getting more power to the drivetrain by downshifting...
