I have a '99 c230K with a black steering wheel and was curious if there's a compatible horn pad with chrome star or maybe a separate emblem that I can use (safely, in the event of airbag deployment)?

I am in the same boat.
you can't buy the pad with chrome star from dealership as they sell it "with the airbag" so its like $2000.
so any other options people??

Wil the 2000 pad switch out with a '99 pad without modifications, maybe if I were to find one at a junk yard, etc?

Would a self-adhesive trunk emblem do the trick without being a safety issue?

Yes, you are right it would probably be too big.
What about the chrome emblem in the wheel center-cap. They are about 70mm, are cheap and can be easily be removed from the cap?

I would think a trunk emblem would be a serious safety issue. At best, it would brand your forehead with an MB symbol. At worst, the emblem would snap and the sharp ends would lodge in your face.

It may be sad, but it's one of the factors that got me into a 2000 model

Man alive!
You guys sure are finicky (I agree with the safety aspects though)!
How about a PURPOSE- MADE steering wheel button?

Aren't those for the steering wheels that do not have airbags? How about one of those carbon labels like this...
