View Full Version : What would cause second gear to stick?

On a 722.4 transmission. Fluid level is perfect, fluid looks clean, not black or burned (just drained and refilled today.)

It holds longer than it should, sometimes up to 4500 rpms. If I drive it slow it will shift to third.

If I let off the gas (like I'm driving a stick) then apply gas again it will shift.

Also, I notice my passenger door lock is hesitating to go down when I lock the doors, which indicates a vacuum leak. Could a leak be causing both the 2cd gear stick as well as the passenger lock issue?

Or:

Sticking valve?

b2 piston?

Other than that, it drives perfect.

Yeah mine hold's onto second like nobody's business when it's cold, and is usually good after i pull out of my neighborhood. Is this all the time that your doesn't shift?

All the time now. Hot or cold.

When I say sticks in second, I mean it sticks, not like when the car is warming up. It will not let out of gear unless I let it go to high rpms or manipulate the gas pedal.

Do you have a CEL?

is it a C230 Kompressor? sounds like a warm-up cycle, and the beginning of a failing MAS (you won't get a CEL until the MAS is pretty much dead).

Failing MAS would cause this symptom?

Car is a 94 c280.

I believe its because your tranny has gotten into safe mode, go straight to the stealer or elsewhere relevant to get it checked / fixed.

Im not an expert on automatics, but my guess would be a dirty valve body.

It shifts out of second eventually as I said in my first post. Drives great after that. When it shifts depends on how I depress the accelerator.

jnenad16:

Dirty valve body...Does that need to be taken out to be cleaned?

Edit: After more sleuthing I think the problem sounds like a k1 spring.

LOL, I was still wrong. There is no k1 spring in this transmission I found out.

Thinking possible vacuum leak, or bowden cable adjustment needed. I will begin work on it tomorrow and update my finds.

I know this isn't the case for our OP [SLCPUNK] but just an FYI on this topic ... that's covered in your owner's manual. They tranni does that to warm-up the car to full operating temperature quicker, and not to be alarmed by it, it's normal. :p (or something to effect; really, says that; no fib).

I adjusted the Bowden cable today and it now shifts as it should. I fiddled around with it for about an hour or so. Adjusting the nut, then test driving, repeating the process until I found a shift point I was ok with.

A & J German Motorenwerke in Tampa quoted me 3200 for a MB rebuild with a 2 yr warranty, and 800 labor. They were either being dishonest or are incompetent. Either way, they will never get my business (how much money is that on the backend?) or my recommend. Quite the opposite, they will get a big fat thumbs down from me.

Took me an hour and so of internet time searching and reading up on this. The job required me to remove the washer fluid reservoir (by hand) then turning the cable (by hand) until I was satisfied with the result.

Gotta love the internet!

Congrats! Glad you got it solved.

How many times do we hear stories where the dealer recommends a complete system replacement when they really don't know what the problem is and thus would rather just replace the whole system/unit/whatever? Transmissions, supercharger assemblies, etc.?
