Hey guys, apparently there are three types of thermostats you get. There's the 79 degree one, the 87 degree one, and the third i'm not sure (but it doesn't matter)
I want to know the part number fot the 79 degree thermostat, cos my car spends most of it's time around 100 decrees in traffic, and i want a cooler running engine

Just go into one of your auto supply and ask for thermostat for
your car.

do my thermostat and electric thermoswitch mod and you'll never have to worry about high engine temps. search for it. as for obtaining a 79C thermostat, either ask the dealer for a thermostat for a 88 260E and make sure they open it and see if its 79C, or look locally for a behr or wahler thermostat with this part number: 1002000715.

read all the pages, as it might answer most questions about installing it properly.

Thanks again nenad. So just to confirm:
1) When i get the 1987/8 260E thermostat, do i have to get it with the housing or can i use my old housing?
2) Will it actually say "79oC" inside when i open it up?
3) This thermo switch, where does one get it from? Is it something i can make or do you buy it?
4) From the sounds of it, this thermo switch is just using your auxillary fans to maintain the required temp. Doesn't this put excessive strain on the electric fans, even if you set them 2 degrees above hughway temp?
5) I would really like to get rid of my visco fan, cos i can feel that it consumes alot of power, especially at high rpm. What do you say about this? I have to also add that the car is a daily runner, 60 miles per day.

yes the thermostat will say its rated temp. you will reuse your old housing/cap. there should be a link to the thermoswitch in that thread, if not, here it is:
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_751522_-1_11471 (thats the one I use, its cheap and gets the job done)
it wont put much strain on the electricals, which is why I say to set it a bit above freeway temps, which will also be the same as the city temps most of the time, except in heavy traffic, which is when this thermoswitch comes into play.
as for getting rid of the fan clutch, it can be done, I have never done it, though, so I cant comment or suggest it myself.

Hey nenad, found out my car actually has a 75oC thermostat!!
It's made by the company 'wahler' (i think that's how you spell it).
Is this a mercedes part?
So looks like this is the coolest i'm gonna get her to run...

I guess thats would be the south african version of it, which is great! wish we had those in the states, but even if we did, our cars are not calibrated for such low temps.

I have installed the 79c stat and was wondering how much the temp would rise if i removed the mech fan? Can someone who has removed it comment please.

Apparently the thermostat used here is also the 87oC, just like you guys!
Why do you say the car's not calibrated to run on this thermo?
I spoke to a merc mac here who said apparently this 75 thermostat was fitted as a standard part on the W123s and some r107s. If you look at the thermostat housing, it actually starts off "107" which means it originates from the r107 (the 1970s/80s SL). Interesting!! :)

i'll check my old 87c stat to see what the part numbers are... but I love having the 79c stat, seeing the lower temps makes me feel better, not sure if it really does much for the engine, but i do feel better...lol Could someone also post who has removed the mech fan, I want this done but am not sure if the temp would even rise, not sure what the mech fan is set to turn on at, but i think the cooler stat should make up for it, anyone?

car's ECUs are calibrated for different markets that have different emisions laws. like for us here in the states, the standard thermostats are 87degrees on which the car is tuned for lower emissions, and if you drop that temp more than 10 degrees, you will have higher emissions output because the car would be running rich(colder operating temps make cars use more gas).
