I took it to the dealer, and after they charged me $250 worth of diagnostic checks they told me I was looking at $9K in repairs, and that I'd be better off buying a new car :-/

Said I needed a new transmission, and a new O2 sensor, and a MAS or a MAF [excuse my ignorance]

I took it to Autozone, and had them do their free checks...and it threw the following codes...

P0410
Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

P0170
Fuel Trim Malfunction
(Bank 1)

P0302
Cylinder 2
Misfire Detected

This is a 2000 C230K with 118K miles, and I don't want to spend a lot of money on it (<= $2K MAX)...

But I'd like to drive it until at least September or so if possible.

Any help out there? I was reading about how easy it seemed to replace/clean the mass airflow components...and can someone explain the difference between a MAF, and a MAS...because I see that refernced a lot as the main issue that goes wrong...

and IF I can just change that, what's a part number that I can use to order one...

I see where I can get an air mass sensor (this must be the source of the MAF / MAS confusion) for $238 and an O2 sensor for around $110...scoring me both for just under $350...

Should I try these...or is that a lot to spend on a wing and a prayer? (even though it's far less than the $8K the dealer suggested)

and that reminds me...the transmission isn't even that old...I recently had it replaced, just before my extended warranty ran out :-/

It got stuck in 1st gear about a year and a half ago...but luckily under 100K miles which was when my extended warranty ran out...

So surely the tranny can't be bad again...it's been like 25K miles...tops...

the trans is fine, that's why they call it the stealership.

it sounds like you've got an aged MAS, a vaccuum leak (possibly on the trans, as there are two vaccuum lines on it) which is tied to your p410. i'm actually still fighting with that code myself and it disengages my supercharger after warm-up cycle.

sounds like it just needs a tune up man, you'll be fine. change the coils, plugs, mas, and test the o2 sensors. i buy all my parts online from http://www.alleuropeanautoparts.com

good luck!

Is it "hard" to change those myself...or is that something I'd definitely want a shop to do, even if I bought my own parts?

everything is easy but finding the vacuum leak. you can always do a visual inspection, and check things out on your own, but they always seem to stump me.
