View Full Version : New exhaust.

My stock exhaust was exhausted, really exhausted. I've replaced everything with a custom stainless (headers and back).
The car is running fine and has a nice sound.
It's been a few tanks and I've been watching my mpg. It's been running about 25mpg. This is a little low and I think that it is running rich.
From what I've read that is probably true, but I've no idea how to measure it.
I don't think I'm damaging the cat, but I've read stories about them.
My questions:
Whether or not I should chip the car to compensate for the increased exhaust flow.
I'm only using a gut check to see if it's running rich by checking the mpg before and after. Obviously there's a better way. What are your recommendations for a noob like me.
Back pressure is another thought that I understand the concept, but have no practical experience with nor how to measure.
Stock intake for now.
Thanks for any info.
I would have thought the ECU would keep A/F in check for closed loop conditions?...but WOT/reading straight from the maps mite be alittle out now you have done the full exhaust system...
You really need to run a decent A/F meter that is able to store data on road or on the dyno for graph use to see whats going on...then make the changes accordingly.
it seems almost every engine mod done these days benefits somwhat more from fuel/Ign map changes

Any recommendations on a scanner to measure A/F ratio?
Actron 9190 or 9180 perhaps.

Yup the O2 sensor is still there.
Is the milage really that bad???
When i said "you need to run a decent A/F ...",I should have said you could have someone run a decent A/F logger on road or on the dyno...As who ever makes mapping changes will need to run there own software so they can tune it accordingly...
So if you did purchase an A/F logger you may end up paying for it to be done by somone else with there own equipment anyway...
Alot of mods on street engines end with poorer fuel economy...somtimes because you've shifted the most effecient RPM higher in the Rev range, thus you may no long use it very often in daily driving...
You may find the new exhaust isnt as effective at scavanging under 2500RPM as the old was so you may have slightly less torque in the lower RPM area, this may equate to you pushing the pedal that little bit more than you usually would while accelerating between traffic lights...you get the idea?=)
If milage really isnt that bad then its probly not worth the cash attempting to fix it...if your fussy as hell and want every bit out of your mods then alittle ECU work should help..
It would pay to contact a workshop that can re-map the bosch ECU you have and inquire about cost and estimated benefits given the mods you have.

Paul

Fuel Mileage is down to 20 mpg now. It's holding steady there though.
Ok as soon as it get's slightly warmer I'll put some more up from underneath. 2.25" downpipes. Highflow Cat. Center resonator.
But for now, here's what I've got on hand.

Strictly was one of the few that bought my M111 headers back in the day before I stopped production on them due to lack of demand. Of course like everyone else chineese companies love to copy stuff haha and now there are cheap low quality replicas on ebay.
They look great, congrats :) .
