View Full Version : A/C repair tape?

Got an A/C leak in the tubing that bends from the drier to the
radiator (can see the dye). Anyone know if there's a tape that can be used
to temporarily patch up the leak? Like to get through the rest of
the summer before having to take it to the mechanic.

Gotta be something out there. They make tape
that repairs just about everything.

Also meaning to ask. I understand you can get
a reading of the A/C pressure through the climate
control panel. If this is true, how do you do this
and what is the "normal" pressure level for the
C220 A/C? At what pressure level will the system
shut itself off?

there is a chart I posted awhile ago that explains the a/c self-diagnostics. when the pressure drops below 50psi, the compressor will shut off. however, the diagnostics will display the pressure in bars, so just convert that into psi.
1bar=14.7psi

Is that the chart you listed on your August 17, 2005 post?
Didn't indicate how you get the pressure reading. How
would you do that? And is that diagnostic proceedure applicable
to a '905 C220? Also, you mention a normal A/C system operates
around 200 psi. How much freon has to be lost before it drops
to the shut-off 50 psi level?

the best way to measure the pressure is with the pressure gauges. you would do that with the ac off, to measure the rest pressure, which should be around 50psi for the compressor to engage. if its under that, then the compressor wont go on.

Clean tubing, sand tubing, clean tubing with acetone, or brake cleaner. Find some fiberglass cloth. Cut in thin strips. Using JB Weld, or another good epoxy, don't use quick setting epoxy, put down a coating of epoxy on tube; overwrap with epoxy; cover with epoxy. Let set up for 2 or 3 hours. Do again. If it leaking to much, you may not be able to get it clean enough for the epoxy to hold.

Replace the leaking tube, refill and enjoy.
Or, run it dry, destroy the compressor and replace it and the dryer plus maybe a few other components.
