Hey guys, My 1998 c240 wont start, I suspect iv blown one of my coils as i left the key with the power on for awhile. The battery is fine, it has plenty of juice (I checked this out with the help of a vault meter). it doesnt really turn over, it will turn over once before shutting off, the engine doesnt start..
Im sorry that this is a bit brief, but if anybody could help me out i would greatly appreciate it.
Anybody had this problem before?
Is it something other than a blown or burned out coil?
Thanks,
Chris

If it doesn't really turn over, your battery is NOT fine. It is stuffed!

Are you saying the engine won't crank over on the starter motor normally?

Or are you saying the engine does crank strongly but won't start?

Yeah. Your battery may show your the correct voltage, but from what you describe, it has no depth. There aren't any amps behind the volts you are seeing.

Get a battery charger and charge it back up.

Thanks for the responses, I am currently taking your advice, and the battery is on the charger. I hope to god that its only a flat battery. Ill keep u informed

All right.... The battery was on the charger for awhile, I connected it back up to the car and nothing changed.. still wont start.

Heres basically what happens:
I go to turn the car on and it fires once, maybe twice but then it dies. It doesn't catch and start.

I can hear the fuel pump loud and clear so it cant be that, im confused as to why it stops firing though?

Any other solutions?

Thanks for your help guys

I think I might have been confused by what you meant by:
It fires once or twice...

But the starter motor keeps on cranking right? Or does that stop also? I thought the starter was also dying.

Sorry if I confused you, its weird aye ive never heard of anything like this. The starter motor stops also. I dont get that clicking sound of a flat battery which makes me think it cant be that..
Should I just bite the bullet and send it into a mercedes mechanic?
Lol this is my second C class and my second C class which has refused to start.

Bring your battery to a specialist battery shop and have them test it. Replace if required.

Many specialist battery shops have a mobile service and delivery/installation team that can do the job on site for you (usually at negligible extra cost). This will save you getting your hands dirty. They will also advise you if you have problems other than the battery.

I am positive the problem doesnt lie in the battery, I connected a friends battery to my c240 and the problem was still there.
An update though is i managed to get the car started, but when i turned it off, it wouldn't start again :( ive owned this car a week lol.
Also, since i disconected my battery, my electric windows dont really work and my electric seats dont work at all.. Any solutions?
Sorry to be a pain with all these problems.

When you got the car started, did the engine run normally, strongly and smoothly?

Don't worry about the other things...the electric windows will be fine when you go through the re-synchronising procedure (see your owner's manual). This is normal after dis-connecting the battery.

O ok great thanks :) one less thing to worry about.

Yea, once I got the car started it ran very normally, full power, no problems with gear shifts.

Any ideas?
Thanks so much for your advice so far mate

I would very strongly suspect your crankshaft angle sensor. This is a known problem with our cars. Loss of signal from this sensor then, it will not start or run. If running, and loss of signal, it will stop.
The sensor is located at the back of the engine in line with the flywheel.

Try fiddling with the connector and then try a start. If it starts fiddle with the connector (caution! don't burn yourself or put your hand near any moving parts!) and see if that stops the engine.

The following link will give you some idea:

Good luck!

Hmmm CPS? that sounds very plausable. Its easy to replace isnt it? When my c200 didnt start I thought that was the culprit. Thanks very much for your help and advice, ill let you know if it turns out to be the CPS.

Hey sorry again, just a quick question, "hopefully this will help others with what appears to be a common stalling issue in the ML series"
My 240 doesnt have a stalling issue? so would this mean that the CPS isnt the culprit?
Cheers.
