View Full Version : Price on Pad installation
So I am looking to buy #1 spring pads for my car all the way around. The place says that the part is cheap however it will take about 1 hour to install each pad and cost just over $500 for installation and the pads. Is this way too much? And also is this swap from stock pads to #1's possible for me to do myself. (I do not know too much about cars but a little... just want to know the difficulty.)
Thanks for any help.

wow kid, the shop must have seen you $$$ signs all over you...:D the pads change is technically the same as changing springs, so while you are at it change the springs too. im sure you can do it yourself. its not that hard to do, just make sure you have the right tools. took me about 2 hours to do the job the first time and that was figuring out what to take off and what not.

the price they're quoting him is because it's a job they don't want to do. to break it down in the simplist of terms, it's better to over bid a job then tell them you won't do it.
to change the spring pads requires that you remove the springs, and it's generally easier to remove the shocks (lower half at the least) in the process to allow for clearance to drop the springs out, and ultimately remove the spring pads.
it's not that you're over-paying to change $20 worth of rubber. you're asking them to do an incredible amount of labor for what in my opinion would yield almost no results.
My father will not let me get lowering springs because he believes that they are not safe and the car will not be the same. I have argued this with him many times but he will NOT let me get them. He however will let me get #1 pads and I really need to drop my car at least a little. The person do the change is my fathers mechanic who has been doing work for my family for about 7 years and are freinds of my dads. I have no idea why they said it would cost so much however tools-wise to do the sway myself what would i need. $500 is way more than i will ever pay for this swap...

Your father's mechanic is in cahoots with your father so that you would change your mind in installing the pads ;) Ask another mechanic for an estimate.

Going from highest to lowest pads will result in a change of maybe 1/2 inch lowering.

Kid, dont waste your time and money.
changing spring pads as a way to lower your car is pathetic not to mention a waste of time/money - just load the trunk up with bricks and youll get a better result.
if your dad isnt letting you do a spring/shock install then the car isnt even yours.

buy lowering springs, and have them swap the pads and springs on the DL. your dad will just assume the pads played a huge role.
lets be honest, your dad sounds a little dense if he thinks lowering the center of gravity , and reducing body roll on a vehicle is dangerous. if you can afford it, swap the shocks too, and show him some literature that explains the benefits of aftermarket suspension upgrades.
they're not call upgrades for nothin'!

If the mechanic knows what hes doing he can get the job done in half an hour...and for way less than $500.00. I wouldnt do it yourself if you dont know much about cars. Working with springs is dangerous especially if you dont know what youre doing.
Thanks for your help. And FYI the car isn't technically mine as my parents payed for it however i bought all the mods...
