Power steering pump checks out OK(new fluid & pressure test), alternator checks fine. Water pump is tight & not leaking. Mercedes cannot find it.
It has gotten considerably louder over the last few months, but has done it since new(I inquired about it & the owner told me as well as the dealership). ALOT of people think I put on a supercharger..
So opinions, experiences with this type of noise. Apparently it isnt hurting the car as it has been doing it for years, but like I said it seems to have gotten MUCH louder over the last few months to the point of aggervation.
Sometimes I dont even want to drive the car because I hate hearning it.

Tranny is fine. They had it out & checked it. Looks brand new. It is definitly from the front of the engine. It whines a bit more when the wheel is turned, but not like a typical failing PS pump. I will get a vid of it when parked & idling.
As for the car pulling pretty hard..Thank You. But that was nothing. I was only a bit more then 1/4 throttle(only took it to abotu 100kmp=60mph), because I was near my sons school & a residential area. Now that I have me camera phone I dont need to hold my digital camera, so maybe I can get a shot in full flight down the corridor.

man i still say its you PS pump take a screwdriver or somthing that full metal and long ok. then turn your car on and put your screwdriver or what ever your using adn place it on all your accerories and place you ear on the outher end and listen to each pully and see witch one is the loudest

That is the first thing I did. I also used my stethoscope. I know it really sounds like the PS pump. But it doesnt whine when turned to full lock or when I even turn the wheel. The tone also changes when I turn on the AC..But I NEVER heard a AC clutch make that noise..It is loudest in that area, but there is also some kind of Idler pulley there, that makes the same sound. But as you can tell it sounds just like a bad FLUID pump(like a bad HYD pump on heavy equip)
I may just say the hell with it & replace both. The car has been great to me so it needs some new parts.

ok if you did what i told you, you should of found it did you go on all accerories, if so try doing the same to the transmission and if that fails it might be a slightly cloged PS line

Perhaps spray some WD-40 on one part at a time, then test. When the noise disappears, you will have located the culprit?

Our '97 c230 makes a noise like a diesel from the front of the engine. It is my wife's car and only has 43000 miles on it. My independent mechanic said the noise comes from the shock absorber applied to the idler pulley on the serpantine drive belt. Seems the rubber grommet on the shock wears and causes the thing to vibrate and make the noise. He held a mini-crow bar against the mount bolt while the engine was running and the noise vanished. It doesn't hurt anything, unless the pulley eventually craters. When I have my next service, he will fix it.
Might see if it is your problem also. The shock on the 4 cylinder is right above the idler wheel and is obvious. Maybe the 6 also has the same set up. I's curious to see if it is your problem also.

agree, sound like water pump failure to me. but to confirm that you might find small amount of coolant leak around your water pump.

hey espresso, did you find out where the whine was coming from?

Not yet. I sold my system, so I had to take it out. Plus I tracked down the rear end noise I was having. Besides the subframe bushes(that I fixed with washers), the right outer control arm bush, is COMPLETELY gone. It started as soon as I "fixed" my subframe bushes.......
One problem lead to another.
But now that it is parked. I will have time to track it down. So I should know today or tomorrow.
