I'm getting ready to do my first oil change on my '97 C280 with 122K. Can anyone recommend whether I need to use synthetic or regular oil and what weight. I'm in the south so it does not get relatively cold. I looked up some threads but I don't see any definitive answers. I thought it had to be regular but a while back I saw a MB dealership offering a special on the 97 and older MBs for $50 and I think it was with regular oil which then led me to wonder. I did not need an oil change at that time, so I did not get it.

It's safe to say that many of us use Mobil 1 Synthetic, 0-w40 or 5-w40.

If your car was brand new, you would definitely want to go synthetic. If you have not been using synthetic before and now have 122k on the motor, I would think twice about switching over to synthetic now. There are a number of threads on the different MB forums that debate this topic. You might want to do some research to help you decide.

That's what I am having difficulty deciding. I just got the car with 118K and I'm not sure what the previous owner used. All I knew is that she took it for regular changes to one of those Jiffy lube places when the indicator showed up. I've read the theory behind using synthetic on higher mileage engines and am not sure what to believe.

I got 170K on my car. I'm currently using mobil 1 synthetic and I don't have any complain except the price every 5,000 miles. ;)

I use the Mobil 1 Synthetic, 0W-40 on mine. My M104 C36 engine has 157,000 km which is nearly 100,000 mls. Fully synthetic works perfectly and is what I would recommend.
