View Full Version : Gaging interest: Custom Radiator & High-Flow Electric Fan for C36, etc

For those of you living in hot climates or stitting in a lot of traffic, I have been thinking about having some custom radiators made in the 5-10 radiators range.

Combined with a high flow electric fan (get rid of the MB vicous clutch and fan).

Just trying to find the level of interest. It would be nice to find interest and complete the project by late winter/early spring.

I wasnt sure where to post this.

This will probably be about a 1000 USD upgrade, custom all aluminum radiator, thicker than normal, electric fan/relay kit.

So this will be done for a 1995 C36 AMG. I need to see what other cars share that radiator or the space is the same. If people can comment on that too, that would be great.

From the EPC data it looks like the 95-97 C36 has the same radiator as the 94-97 C280.

So this upgrade would be idea for any C36 (1995-1997) or the C280 from (1994-1997), basically the C280 with the M104 inline 6 motor. However, the 98-up C280 radiator looks very similar to the ealier C280, so maybe something could be worked out.

But the C43 definately takes a different radiator.
Thanks,

Austin

Wow! Good try. I am very interested about those electric fans. About the radiator, it is a great idea too. How about an oil cooler?

you can probably buy the factory OIL cooler from MB-Europe with the p/ns.

I just want to make a radiator for the water, and then have the connections for the tranny oil cooler which is built into the stock radiator.

$1000 is $$$$$$$$$.

If you want just askme.... I may be able to have some made for under $400.

honestly though, its not really necessary, Just get lower thermostat + "Cool Harness" and you will run between 80-82 in all temps (did it on my M104 S320, was amazing)

hope that helps

what about with the hps kit on my c43

i doubt that would be nearly enough for my application eh?

how do you spend that much?

literally

custom alumium radiator is at least 6-7 hundred. Maybe if you lived where the summers are 115 d F. you woud understand.

Kind Regards,

I remember driving with my sister last summer in her 230 and the temp in the car was 120 at one point, didnt look at the engine temp

yes it will be more than enough even for HPS. it will drop your temps to much lower levels. and it will help kick in the auxilary fans much sooner as well (intead of 100+ it kicks in at 92). Stock thermostat opens at 87-88, this allows it to open at 80. On my S32 W140 M104 my temps were always between 79 - 82 degrees with the combo, it did wonders. hope that helps.

the Cool Harness is a great idea. I have wired up the aux fan to a relay on my diesel to kick it on early.

I really want to just gage interest on the custom radiator for C36 and C280s.

Thx.

Sounds interesting. I need to get a new radiator anyway becasue mine is plugged up. Id love to eliminate the stock fan also. What parts exactly would i be looking at? I dont think i need a different radiator because its never hot in washington, but i really do want an electric fan.

the stock dual fans are MORE than enough. The lower thermostat and lower fan switch are MORE than enough to compensate for no mechanical fan. The fan delete will really help engine rev up quicker and rev more freely, you really notice it on the top end. That + the cool harness do wonders together. You do not need an additional electric fan

where do you get all these parts from omey? such as the lower temp electric fan switch? i presume the thermostat is just from the dealer, and also what is this cool harness?

I'll second or third, or whatever the interest. Tell us more about this 'cool harness' and electric fan delete. Sounds like a pretty decent mod.

Im probably just going to have a custom radiator built in a quantity of ONE. Combined with a new factory clutch. Should be golden.

Thanks for your replies. Realize 2-5, 10 will be cheaper. If you are serious email me.

For those of you that do the cool harness let me know. I think thats a patch IMHO, however an all aluminum radiator is better for several reasons.

I don't think that I am going to do the electric fan.

Hey guys,

The link to the "cool harness" is below. I bought from him before and install literally took 20 seconds, its truly plug and play and it works 100% as promised. My old M104 ran between 80-82 degrees 95% of the time and even in the hottest of temps (Full AC in summer) it would go back up close to normal stock temps. This was all on y stock radiator too, the MB stock radiators are much better and much more reliable than the stock BMW ones, they are less prone to failure, and with the lower fan switch & thermstat it will DEFINITELY help your radiator last much much longer b/c it will be expose to much less extreme temps (you will never see 100C again, or even 95 for that matter).

Yes its a bit expensive considering its just a plastic plug but I believe in supporting innovative modders who come up with a great idea so its well worth it for a plug & play application. The 92c degree switch is the one you want.

heres the link, scroll down towards the bottom and you will see the cool harness. ...

as far as thermostat is concerned I will have to go back through my notes and figure out which one it is, when I figure it out i'll let u know

Im just going to do 1-2 custom aluminum C36 radiators. No electric fan. I will wire up aux fans to relay for manual switch and also coming on at 100 degrees C. And possibly a new fan clutch.

If the 300SL R129, or S320 w140 has a fan blade with more blades, I may do that as well. It looks like from the EPC and worldpac that these have 6 blade fans where the C36 has 9 blades. Can anyone physically confirm?

Thanks for your replies.

honestly its not even worth it, the stock radiator has all the cooling capacity in the world. The problem is not the radiator, the problem is that the stock fan switch & thermostat are set very high from the factory thats why the temps get so hot. Your car will not run a single degree cooler even if you make a $2000 radiator.

just 2 cents from many years of experiece, take it for what its worth
