Guys.. I think the day has come where for once, im in trouble with my c-classes.. With my last to mercs ive gotten off lightly, but now my 1994 c280 has decided to be a royal bitch and kill the trend :(

Reverse gear isnt engaging, or sometimes it is but only just..
When it does engage, there is a pronounced grinding sound coming from my tranny. Now! i need advice from all of you (and I know there are a lot of you) who have had tranny problems similar to this or maybe even this exact problem.

Firstly any ideas why this is happening?

Secondly, should I take it to an independant merc mechanic?

OR, should i take it to a transmission specialist?

Thirdly do i just need to flush and refill my transmission??? :D? naa i know it wont be as simple as that.

But seriously all you OG's who can give me any suggestions, I would very much appreciate it..

Thanks.

we are selling new trannys through the independant mercedes shop i work at for about $3-$4k.
is your tranny a auto or manual?
if its an auto, you should take advantage of the situation and get yourself a manual tranny from a c36 if it applies.

and as far as rebuilding the transmission, wether it be yourself or a tranny shop. i think it wouldent be too cost effective especially if you already hear a "pronounced grind"

out of curiousity, how many miles on the transmission? and how often did you change the fluid?
reason why im asking is, out of all the mercedes transmissions i do at work. they have never had the fluid changed. and all the cars seem to be right around 60 to 80k on them.

.

huh? i dont think they even put manuals into the c36s
it would be much easier to find one out of a c280 from europe.
but id take it into a transmission shop, would be chaeper than stealership

Ive owned the my c280 for about a month now, so I havnt serviced the transmission at all. Its done 126,000kms (76,000miles)

Ive thought about a manual transmission but I think that will be a little to expensive... :(

Ive been quoted $1000NZ around 750US to have my reverse gear fixed by an independant mercedes mechanic.
OR $2250NZ - $1650US to have the whole gearbox rebuilt.

Good prices? I dont think I should get the whole box done because other than reverse and a sharp downshift into first, its fine.

---My bet is the transmission has never been serviced
