Hey guys, im from australia.

Im looking to do an engine conversion either a merc 6 and turbo it or a merc 8 does anyone have suggestions on engine numbers, experience or any suggestions?

to comply with australian standards the motor cant be older than the car 1998.

Thanks heaps

not worth it.

you can get like a C43 motor, the transmission, then you will need to get the diff from it which may even have to have the C43 driveline and rear axles (not sure of that)

then you need the engine harness, and the ECU. the ECU may not even plug and play you will need the body harness - which is the wire harness for the entire car. the ECU will have a differnt VIN and which wont match the EIS and wont let your car start. you can get the VIN matched to your EIS BUT if you noticed- your car will have either a DAS I,II,III system, DAS III is the cars with the newer smart keys I think all C43's came with smart keys.

so its way too much, trust me ive done research on this and it wont be worth it.

if you have a C180, I think you can choose between the C200. C220, and maybe even the older C230 motors without the SIEMENS fuel injecters.

if you have a C280 I6 you can swap a C36 motor.

C43 can swap the E55 motor,

I think those are the only options you can go to.

Dont bother, buy a C36 or C43 to being with.

Reasons:

Conversion is expensive, like really expensive, and changing a 4 to a 6 or 8 is mega money, as you need to uprate driveline, trans, diff, get the electronics to work.

You wont have the suspension or brakes to match the power upgrade.

Cosmetic only but you wont have the AMG bodywork

Your resale value will be shit.

Finding the engine probably wont be easy.

There are probably more reasons too, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

This is what I'm considering for my C280, swap the motor for the 3.2 V6 and supercharging it.

very true, like i priced everything out....your looking at 8 to 10 grand for a turbo setup, including tuning, forged pistons, etc etc. put 8-10 grand into a $500 1987 blown Mustang 5.0.....you'll have 1 hellah of a beast

best bang for the buck is the 3.2 out of the E320 car, in the early years it was an inline 6 cylinder, much better room for a turbo or supercharger. also, the getrag from the 16valve 190e bolts right up to that engine, as said on 190revolution.net and that trans can handle 450hp. I wouldn't even waste my time with an AMG engine, when you can do so much better with stock.

it said,
"to comply with australian standards the motor cant be older than the car 1998."

so 1987 = too Old. ;)

8-10g is to expensive for turbo setup.
but hey different places different cost. :)

I've seen a turbocharged BMW 318 in Aust, custom made it cost no more than AU$5grand on standard internal. (2nd hand turbo, off S14). BUT it run low boost Max 6-7psi and gain hmm I wouldn't say much, but enough to give some kick than the standard power.

All the electrical issues can be sidestepped with a standalone ecu, which i would use anyway if you were doing a V8 or a Turbo.

Dearlove

yeah, using standalone, hardest part will be dealing with the key...

It really isn't all that hard either. I've spoken with the tuning guys and the security system on modern cars isn't that hard to deal with. What you do on a benz is the same as what you do on a 370Z, or any other modern car. You move the stock ecu somewhere out of the way and you have only about four wires going to it. Power, ground, the ignition and the immobilizer. You let it think everything is normal and then bypass it for the actual operation of the car. It involves running a few wires here and there but it's simple, and the security system on 202s is much less complicated than newer cars.

im in the middle of changing a v6 to a v8 w202

i have every thing

as for the conversion going well their are a lot of things that you need to buy that people dont think of or will ever see so far i have
c43 engine
engine harness
air intake system
manifolds
maf and plastic connector piece
extra coil packs and plugs
new water pump
new rocker gaskets and oil cooler seals
fly wheel
rear diff
drives
prop-shaft
engine ecu , key, EIS , steering lock
de-cat exhaust stainless
gearbox oil cooler
c43 rad as the c240 one is slightly different it due to the double air in take
new springs and shocks
c43 front calipers , discs , pads
new drag links
idle arm
steering box
new brake master cylinder as the c43 one is bigger and need to be for the stopping power
new quilted leather door cards off a c43
i have the clocks fitted from a c43 all ready
c43 rubber arch trims
new calipers , discs
fuel pump

and so on

just need a gear box , ecu for gearbox , and torque converter

wow you have quite the list going on there

well i didnt even know the 202 came as a v6 so your miles ahead of me

im keeping my eye out for the c36 or c43 brakes as well, plus doing a coil over conversion
you should start a thread when your underway, would be quite a worth while read

zmatt

that's a great list, a few things.....

you can avoid the whole rear suspension, diff, drive shaft issue if you have a custom drive shaft made. A good fab shop should be able to handle that. That will allow for the different length fromthe V8 tranny but allow you to hook up to the stock diff and not muck with all that.

You can also go with an aftermarket big brake kit from stoptech or brembo if sourcing AMG parts are too hard. Also don't forget that many of the larger benz's have bigger brakes that will bolt on as well. SL and S class would be a good start.

If you are going through the trouble of putting in the motor I would have a custom intake and exhaust made anyways so you don't need all of those parts. You could change the dual intake system to single intake if you want and just have a larger maf housing made (see my thread) for what i mean. This would mean you don't need the custom radiator either, unless you think you need the extra cooling. If you go standalone then your tune will have no problem tuning for one maf in a big pipe.

i have the entire drive train now engine, gearbox ,prop shaft , diff

i must start a thread

i have been taking pictures as i have gone along so far

i have been keeping the part numbers also

ill start it some day and ill be posting for a day i would say

the engine has 90000 miles on her and now been rebuilt and all new gaskets and so on even do she did not need it

i have to go over sea's for a few weeks so i can wait to get home to have a tinker again

i have a custom de-cat from a good friend olly in england ill post a link of the de-cats he those thats he's c43 next to the c55 that has more mods on it it sounds mad its his baby

Do it! I'd love to see a build thread on that and I'm sure it would invaluable to the community. Also the de-cat pipe sounds beastly man!
