I've always used Castrol Dexron III for my C220. Stealership
says that's what they'd put in if I brought the car to them.
Yours probably takes synthetic, though.

WHOA WHOA WHOA.........YOU CAN ONLY USE AT FUILD FROM THE DEALERSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! You have to buy the dipstick "tool". if you never did a tranny flush, don't try.....If you put to much.....you'll most likely to blow a shaft seal. If there is to little it won't shift, and cause even more problems. If you want you can drain your toque converter. theres like 2 quarts in there, plus about 4 - 5 in the transmission, buy all OEM stuff....AM gaskets suck

thats not true at all, you do not have to use OEM fluid only. In fact Mercedes benz recognizes Red Line as acceptable fluid (probably for economic reasons b/c they paid them off). Royal purple is far superior to both.

The dipstick tool can be found on ebay for real cheap, you can do it yourself. its not very hard as long as you follow the directions.

I put RP in my old S320, the tranny shifted literally 2-3x better, it shifted much faster, and even changed the shift points to make it much more fun to drive. I absolutely loved it and I plan on doing so in my C36 very soon too.

OEM fluid is hardly the best fluid out there, don't believe in the marketing hype and certianly don't believe in the "mercedes liftetime fluid" garbage, all marketing gimics by MB to extract more $$ out of you when you go in for service, so many fall for it everytime.

The new MB ATF is ATF 3353 supplied by Shell and Fuchs. It is backwards compatible with earlier ATs.

I used fully synthetic Castrol Transmax Z in my C36 722.3 AT about six months ago and I am very, very pleased with the performance so far.

Is that 3353 ATF compatible with the old 4-speed MB trannys?
Is it available in the USA? Only found it listed on foreign auto
websites.

ATF 3353 was introduced by Mercedes for the 722.9 Series 7-speed AT and MUST be used with this new AT.

On page 9 of the link I posted (Mercedes Tech Store), MB says that ATF 3353 is compatible with the 722.3/ .4/ .5/ .6 ATs.

The 1 litre bottle is Mercedes Part No A001 989 45 03 10.

I apologize for hi-jacking this thread. I noticed some of you mentioned we can purchased tranny fluid dipstick off ebay. Do you know if this tool offer in ebay will work for a 99 C230K? Thanks in advance.

I think so. It's the right transmission. I know that it doesn't go in all the way. This thread has a picture of the tool in action: http://www.mercedesshop.com/Wikka/Trans7226Fluid
