View Full Version : Instrument cluster bulbs?
Hi guys,
Tell me please, which combination is best looking one? There are so many types of LEDs on the market right now, I have to admit that I'm a little bit confused.
:D
So, help me please, I want it to look BRIGHT AND WHITE!

I recommend the 194 SMT Towers for the 2 big ones. Here's the link:

You also need five of these: Scroll down to 17057. Three for the temp, clock, mileage, and two for the color you want for the gauges. Here's the link:

I can take a picture of mine if you wish, let me know.
Also, just a suggestion, if you use red like me for the gauges, the needles will also light up red. If you use white, they'll be orange.

You'll notice that the far left is dim. That's because I broke one of the "green base" led's by accident, so I soldered in a less bright red led as a temporary fix. It's supposed to look as bright as the other side.

Here's the bulb locations. The green ones are the "green base" and the red one are the "towers". I recommend that you use sand paper to sand down the surface all around the "green base" leds to diffuse the light the best as possible.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Are the bulbs that you have mentioned just a straight swap?

Yes, they're a straight swap. But perhaps you should order a couple of extras of the "green base" just in case you break it like I did.
Another thing that's annoying is that the led bulbs don't tell you which side is possitive. So you have to put them in, plug in the cluster and light them up to see which ones dont work, and turn them around. It may take a while of pluging and unpluging the cluster to get them all to light up but to me way better than the ugly yellow tint it had before.
Sometimes you also have to "tighten" the contacts a bit by pushing the clips a tiny bit closer together on the "green base" bulbs. You also have to be carefull with the SMT towers and hold them by the base and not the led's because you can break a solder joint. It's hard to see the light during the daylight, so a garage would be ideal.

So you fit them to the existing holders then out of the back of the instrument cluster?

are those bright spots (the "5" on the temperature, and the ":" on the clock) or is it from the camera?

The two large 194 bulbs, yes, you take them out, take out the bulbs from the holders, and put in the led SMT Tower.
The "green base" does not require this. You just take out the old one by turning them 90 degrees and then put in the new one.

Thanks junklar, they are bright spots. But I did not sand the surface of the led's on these to diffuse the light, it should take some of the spot away. But I really didn't have another choise for the clock/temp bulbs since those are the only ones anyone sells.
