I am about to have a flush done on my 96 c36 (722.328) @ 168KM. I've bought the gasket, filter and the little red thingy. I tried searching but cant come up with a definite answer.

I have a surplus of Dextron III/Mercon sitting in my garage, would I be able to use this fluid? Its NAPA brand and my brother used it in his Lightning and it works great. Alternatively, I could also use Dextron III provided by Volvo at no charge.

Is there any difference aside from change intervals when comparing to synthetic tranny fluid?

Thank you in advance.

I believe the source on this was the WIS. It pertains to the newer versions of the tranny but it does point out equivalents that are available. You just need to figure out the right equivalents for the older tranny (not sure if they may be the same but it appears so according the to following link). If in doubt, buy the real stuff from autohausaz.com. Your tranny is not worth saving a few bucks.

I can't agree more!!! (It doesn't take much searching to see how financially painful a blown tranny is!)

Those are also excellent links xvvvz provided. While the next one was on an E series, it's another great DIY pictorial:

You might also check and/or change the inexpensive Spacer that often leaks. I discussed the Spacer, an added OEM pan magnet, and a preferred Filter Kit in:
