View Full Version : what could it be!?!?
alright, so i have several problems. first, it seems like my radio reception is horrible. at times the signal is crystal clear but more often than not, it sounds like i'm missing the trebel and only have midrange and low sound. i have the stock cassette head unit with a trunk mounted MB 6 cd changer. this problem only happens when i'm listening to the radio. the sound is great when i'm listening to a cd but, this leads me to my second problem, when i'm listening to a cassette or ipod through a cassette adapter, i'm getting lots of static when hissing S sounds come up. this is a regular occurance since i listen to alot of dance and trance music which mainly consists of high pitched sounds. and my last problem, i recently had an xm radio installed and it will not broadcast through the fm transmitter. i have to play it through a cassette adapter which, in turn, leads to the distorted S's again.
for the tape deck problem, could it be a possibility that the head is just dirty and i may just need to find a cassette tape cleaner kit?
thanks in advance:)

upgrade to aftermarket headunit, the sound quality difference will blow your mind. stock system isn't the best
i am seriously debating doing that but what if my radio reception problem isn't corrected and i'm left with an unconnected xm radio. i also want to be able to connect my 6 cd changer since i spent 40 bucks on a cassette for it because it didn't come with one when i purchased the vehicle.

Either way you should get a new head unit.
If the reception problem doesn't go away, there may be an intermittent connection in the power antenna. Do you have a shark fin type or the roll up stick?

did the radio start doing this after the xm was installed? what do you mean about a unconnected xm radio? are you using a external xm reciever? if so and your trying to listen to the radio turn the xm receiver off. the receiver will casue your radio stations to sound distorted like you are explaining. xm receivers use a wireless modulator and dont work so well , if your trying to use the factory radio invested in a WIRED xm modulator (sold seperatly) which is much better and goes threw the antenna . unless you turn if off to listen to the radio it was cause problems like your explaining.

i guess with a new head unit i could still wire the xm in through one of the auxilary rca inputs in the rear of the radio:)
logic, the distorted radio problem has been in affect since i purchased the vehicle so i'm assuming it is something to do with the head unit. it sounds like some of the channels are cutting out, whether it is different frequencies missing or the signal to the tweeters or door speakers being lost, i'm not sure. right now i have my external xm reciever playing through the cassete deck. i figured out the dirstorted cassette problem though. it was all about how warm or cold the adapter was. heated up the cassette adapter in front of one of the face vents, popped the tape back in and the sound was crystal clear. i think i'm going to see if i can get a hold of some radio removal keys and see what's going on back there. if anything i may get a new head unit once tax money comes in :) thanks for the help everyone!
