My friend and I are still in the middle of this head gasket job. Almost finished, got everything put back together and it was leaking oil out of the timing cover by the tensioner. He said it was stuck shut and the piston would not move. Do i have to replace this or can we fix it???

im not 100% sure but i think the tensioners for the timing chain are 1 way ratcheting, so it will lock in one position (basically so it doesnt move and remove slack) but the tension is applied by the oil pressure if im not mistaken.
so you should be able to push the middle of the tensioner out or something to that effect and then put it back together again.
anyone else chime in about this?

you have to take it apart to put it in. take the whole thing out. remove the center allen bolt from the outer housing. push the piston from the outside thru and it will pop out. you install the outer housing first. then install the piston and spring. then comes the fun part of getting the inner allen bolt back in against the pressure from the spring. This is of course after everything else is put together.

i know this is off the subject, but the 202 's have timing chains or timing belts? and what ever they are when do they require them to be changed?

This may not apply but the following thread is a very interesting read in regard to the chain tensioner and I thought I would pass it along for anyone having problems reinstalling it. There are some good weblinks in the thread too:
