While driving on the freeway, I sometimes get this grinding/knocking noise coming from the center of the car, it sounds like its coming from the transmission. It usually happens in fourth gear when I am letting the car coast. And also, when I go to shut my engine off, I get a rapid clunking coming from what seems to be the same place.

and one more problem! (unrelated)
While making hard left turns, there seems to be clunking coming from the left front wheel.

I would say check your flex disc ASAP..

if that thing gives at high speed you can kiss your car goodbye.....

i had the same knocking .. felt like it came from under the shifter... ignored it..

car died at school ...i got lucky there was no damage... baught the part online and only took a couple of hours to install

i hope this helps.

I bought my disc from here
Autohaus (http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=ka0ytnz4paeskh55wlvdz4rz&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1195477@C280&year=1995&cid=17@Drivetrain%20Parts&gid=7941@Flex%20Disc%20Kit)

It is a DIY. if you need detailed help on how to do it le me know ill try my best to give you clear instructions.
ummm before you jump on this i would advise raising your car and examining your disk. it is located between the driveshaft and the transmission. look for cracks or loose fibres.

hope this helps.

yeah, flex disc and transmission mounts were fine. Apparently the exhaust was misaligned and was knocking against the bottom of the car. They aligned it properly and I havent heard any knocking yet, but we'll if it shows up again.
