Since I've owned my car, i've noticed that for the first half inch or so of gas pedal movement, it does nothing, doesn't move, revs don's increase etc. Also i've noticed if you let off the gas all the way, you have some engine braking present, yet if you hold the pedal just at the end of this half inch, it just coasts perfectly, without any engine braking. Is this a "feature?" only on Mercedes/W202, as i have not noticed/seen it on any other car I have driven. Is there a reason for this?

its not really an issue, just curious. It's more like instead of just coasting, with no other forces involves, you can slightly feel the engine slowing the car down. but if you hold the pedal right at that threshold, it coasts without any engine interference, and without keeping speed. Its very interesting.

are you talking the difference between drive by wire and throttle by wire?

the older first-gen 202's are using throttle-by-wire and i really don't like it.

forces us most of the time to go more than 70% throttle to go up hills :/

I have a 98 c280 non sport. For a long time I wondered this same question and did some searching a while back. I used tto throw it into netural and just let it coast but I'm not sure if thats good for our cars. I read in a post on this forum that you can adjust this "feature" by tightening or loosing the plastic screw on the throttle under the hood. Sure enough it worked. now i can coast without that braking feeling or having to hold the pedal down.

Thats funny cause my old W126 used to do this exact thing with the pedal. Had the play and everything.

So im guessing its normal!

my 1994 C280 is not drive/throttle by wire, it is a direct metal cable connection from the pedal to the throttle body.

you should have this adjustment also.

I do not recommend adjusting it,

first off, ive seen these cables snap from being too tight and crazy drivers mashing on the pedal (squashing the kick down switch)

Second, it will cause your car to stall occasianlly because I think it messes with the throttle position sensor.

take my word, ive messed with 202's enough and leave your cable adjusted the way it is.

What I did was actually loosen it 1/2 turn and it was fine. i have had no stalling or any other problems, unless slightly better acceleration is a problem.:D
