View Full Version : c36 Head
Can anyone tell me other than cams and porting&polishing what other changed were made to the 104 head for the c36?

bigger bore and longer stroke. Just give up now... haha
Thanks for the reply, but I'm after the head details not the block details. I came across a website that had c36 cams listed. Unless I was looking at it the wrong way they were about $1000. If I can get the head modified for about $2g's and I've also read it's about a 19% increase in power it would be a nice start.
Of course unless a c36 engine happens to fall in my lap or close to it.

i very much doubt you will get a 19% increase in power from cams and head work alone,
you would also need to add more fuel, and either raise the compression or add some more timing to get a figure that high.
192hp *19% = 36hp
thats a big step.
maby 10% with cams and head work but even then i wouldnt hold my breath or volunteer to try with my $$$
just my oppionion, take it for wot its worth

GOODLUCK!
FYI the c36 cams have no timing marks at all and no way to line them up. I dont care what any book will tell you, the pin way does NOT work on the amg cams. Those are also set up for a much larger displacement engine then yours so it might run like crap and loose power. You can over cam an engine. Not trying to be a dick, but I have had those cams out and have had an Mercedes master tech tell me he always used the pins to time even with the amg. Bottom line he's full of shit. those holes dont line up at all!

As far as I know, the only other changes to the heads were sodium valves.

I personally have taken my AMG engine apart and looked it up and down....
This engine is a true MARVEL, its a real gem. If you want more power the engine itself is NOT where you need to look. The heads flow VERY well and I was amazing just how amazing these heads were designed. The stock engine in its current form can EASILY make over 320HP if you change the bolt on mods.
Hell my C36 AMG with the AMS crank pulley alone is putting out roughly 295 crank HP and 305-307 ftlbs of torque, thats already more torque than the C43 stock. The problem is NOT the engine. If you what more power you need to swap out components. Very freer flowing exhaust components, crank pulley, some software, my silicone coupler upgrade mod, a drop in K&N and a few other mods and you will be making plenty of power.
My dynos alone prove that the heads flow extremely well up to the 6400-6800 rpm redline; infact power barely even drops off showing that the heads are not the problem. the stock cams are good to at least 7000rpm which you won't hit unless you get stage 2 software. The injectors are also not the problem otherwise airfuels would be spiking violently towards redline. The problem is airflow restriction due to the other components.
First, the stock muffler is not even a 100% free flow design, it is a baffle design, replacing it with a free flowing magnaflow 14833 should yield a good 5-7 crank HP, then replacing the rediculously restricitve mid pipes with freer flowing ones will greatly increase flow and eliminate your old stock cats at the same time. The stock airbox is actually pretty good and if you want you can just do my silicone coupler upgrade & drop in K&N and still pick up a few ponies while keeping that true AMG OEM look which I encourage. I tried a open air K&N style intake and the results sucked, infact I lost significant power. The headers are actually the best OEM log headers i've ever seen so the headers are one of the last things you need to replace. Its not easy to get alot more power out of them without going to a true tubular equal length setup (which I am currently designing right now but its proving more difficult than expected due to emissions & gas recirculation components). headers will be out eventually but for now the crank pulley is more juice than you'll ever need to make you happy.
Here is one of my threads of the internals of my engine, you can see just how well these 3.6L AMG engines were built, they are TRUE HAND BUILT AMG engines and the quality shows. I took these when replacing my head gasket, as you can see this motor is bulletproof, no wonder it can take twin turbos & 500HP+ like its nothing, its built like a panzer tank.
Just Trust me...

FYI, On the C36 engine, only the intake cam is different. The exhaust cam is the same as a 2.8l, but uses a different cam gear with an offset dowel hole to give it a little more timing/overlap.
