makes good sence to me. if you hold the steering wheel when it whines does it stay constant until you let go?

there should be a lil bit of a whine when holding the steering at full lock in either direction.. does it happen to the right as well?

Just the left. And it is getting worse. Changed out the fluid. It only happens when the car has no momentum (i.e. no gas just allowing it to turn with foot off of pedal).

It gets very loud if almost at full lock, and no this sound is definitely not normal.

The more I turn the wheel the louder it gets. If I start moving the wheel closer to straight, the noise slowly diminishes until it disappears altogether.

is it more like a long squeak.. or is a whine.. Im thinking a noisy ball joint. something along those lines.

Nope. 100% coming from the steering somewhere. It's a definite whine. I had a complete suspension overhaul 2k miles ago.

i cant see it being the pump then as its always spinning.. its not going to spin any differently dependng on what way you turn. maybe the steering box?

Air in the steering line?

How does one go about "bleeding" the air out of the line?

as long as your fluid in the power steering reservoir isnt low.. it will never have air in the system. and if it does need to be bled out, it will take seconds for it to bleed with the correct fluid level. just turn steering wheel to each steering lock a couple times.

Hmmm...can't be that then I reckon...:bored:

I had this problem on my W203 and it needed a top up of power steering fluid, however I dont think this is really you're case since you changed the fluid and whatnot.

so you really only hear the noise turning left.. is it gradual.. start at a certain point of turning and then continues to get louder?

its not the right front corner of your car hitting the ground since its far to low?
or a flat tire?:D

It's most noticeable on cold starts...

I'll turn the wheel and it will whine loudly and then it seems to whine louder the more I turn the wheel. It happens at very low speed, which makes me think it might be pump related, just because it has to work harder at slower speeds.

If anyone has ever driven a non-power-steering car, the faster you're going, the easier it is to turn.

slipping belt, or steering pump have a bearing on the way out?
spray some of that belt grip on your belts, thats what i would check if it happened on my car.
try reving your car up to say like 2k then try, if it reduces it could be the belt slipping

will it make the whine just sitting in one spot or do you have to be slowly moving?
maybe get someone to steer for you if it does the noise while not moving and listen under the hood.. try and use a stethescope to hear the noise.. try listening in the pump area. see if its louder there.

It won't do it if the car is stationary...it has to be moving.

hmmm.. well i guess it still could be the power steering pump.. its hard to diagnose correctly without actually seeing the car and hearing the noise!

I had the same problem. Loud whine, getting louder as the car warmed. Talked to a local independant. He suggested a Lucas power steering additive. Used 1/2 the small bottle, just added it to the resevoir. Took a couple of days, now the noise is unnoticeable. Did this eighteen months ago with no further issues.
