Its either a throttle position sensor,or a comination sensor and motor that drives your throttle butterfly if you have drive by wire.

That also what it looks like to me, and at the dealership.

the whole piece is call throttle body. the red box you indicate is idle actuator, you need a starkey to open the screw.

if you are not expert in this field. dun do and adjustment inside the redbox, u might end up spending money to replace the whole throttle body.

good luck.

wetdragon,

Year and model of your car will help pin this down?

Sorry, its a 1996 c220. Is there a way to service this part. I read that the insulation on the wires go bad and the wires start to touch and give idle problems.

The brand new part is $476 from these guys and the labor is about 1.5 hours.

But why does it need changing? What were the symptoms that you suffered?

the car would drive good for 25 mins, but then idle up and down. When i come to a stop it the car would die out. Also if i use the AC the car would cut out.

Except the throttle body check also for air leak in general and the throttle return spring if broken.

you are referring to the complete engine wiring harness. on your particualar car, the problem usually occurs on the harness connectors at the fuel injectors. wiggle the harness and see if the car's idle changes. an easy fix to this is to cut open the insulation at the connector and inject some rtv sealant between the 2 wires so they don't contact each other anymore. i have successfully fixed many customer's cars this way rather than spending the $$$$$$$$$ on a new harness.

It could be the MAS. Failures of this part are very common after 6-10 years and cause everything from rough/uneven idle to very poor performance to weird transmission shifting. Takes 10 minutes to change.

About $267 from these guys:

See if you can find a known good MAS and use it to test your car.
